William Pseudonym
Negotiation is one of the most important life skills needed for an individual. This skill will help him/her out of the most challenging situations successfully without feeling let down or dejected. Some people are born good negotiators, however, for most of us this is skill that we need to learn as we progress through life. Learning to be a good negotiator is not rocket science, however, it needs a lot of patience and practice. This article helps you by listing down a few points that will come in handy for you to help you be a good negotiator.

In order to be a good negotiator, you need to learn to be assertive. Assertive behavior is the midpoint between aggressive behavior and passive behavior. By being assertive, you can put forward you stand without making the other person or party feel intimidated or threatened. It will also prevent you from sounding submissive. So, as a first step towards being a good negotiator, work on your assertiveness.

A good negotiator should be a good communicator too. He/she should be good in verbal and non verbal communication. Being good in non verbal communication is also a must because gestures, posture and body language also matter a lot while negotiating with another person. The negotiator must be able to communicate his/her thought and ideas clearly without any hesitation.

Display self confidence while negotiating with another person. This is very important to be a good negotiator. You can be confident about your negotiations only if you know the product or process well. Hence, having adequate knowledge will help you to a great extent. Also, ensure that your ground work or home work is done well. This will also help instill confidence.

Do not be fixed on your stand. One of the traits of being a good negotiator is being flexible. Hence, you should always be open to negotiations. When negotiating, start with what is going to be most beneficial to you and gradually work your way down to a compromise. Do not make the mistake of agreeing to a compromise at the beginning and then working your way down. This will only result in you feeling like a failure once the negotiations are over.

Do not lose your temper while negotiating. A good negotiator should be able to exert tremendous control and patience. Most of the times the negotiations might not be going the way we want it to proceed. In such situations is important to display self restraint and be calm and composed. Keep the benefit of all parties in mind while negotiating a deal. Remember to keep your ego and anger back home. The minute you blow the fuse, you can consider it to be the end of the negotiation.

A good negotiator should also be very observant and clever. He/she should also be able to display good use of common sense. During negotiations it is important to make note of the body language of the opposition. Hence, being a good observer helps. Also, the negotiator must be clever in order to quickly decipher the tactical approach being taken by the opposition to finalize the deal.
