How News Affect Advertisement

Renee Brown
The news plays a major role in society. The news has such a major roll that every facet of our society has a news forum of some sort. For example companies send news letter to all stakeholders in the company, everyone from the CEO to the customers receives newsletters. Of course none of them receive the same news but everyone receives some sort of communication about changes in the company: internal and external, savings, new policies, store openings, new product offers, knowledge about different things related to the company.

Companies are not the only entities taking advantage of news forums: Private clubs, social media, non-profit organizations, religious groups, government and other social entities take advantage of news forums. News provides society with knowledge about different changes within our environment, politics and other issues. Without the news, society will become out of touch with changes, current issues and advertising will not exist. Advertisement is one of the many tools of news forums commonly used by companies selling products or services. Advertisement can range from many different forms, from electric to paper.

Some examples of advertisement are internet banners, ad word, search engines, social media, blogs, human billboards, direct mail, telemarketing, knocking on doors, radio ads, press conferences, signs on cars, doors and on job sites, billboards, coupons, classified ads, craigslist and other paper articles. The news plays the role of educating the user of different changes or on things not known to the user. Advertisement educates the user on products or services related to a particular business. Advertising and news are both competitive, news competes for ratings or users while advertisement compete for profits some cases users. After doing an evaluation on a sixty minute Nancy Grace segment on Headline News and the commercials within the hour, I have discovered news stories are closely related to the commercials

Headline News with Nancy Grace show is a well-known show. The popularirty of this show comes from its stance on injustices, quick-witted host and her nose to get to the bottom of an investigation. Nancy's stance on injustice was hardened by tragedy she suffered in her own personal life. Her college fiancé was killed by a co-worker, but as Nancy states in her book he was killed by a stranger. Now she takes a stance as a victims' rights advocate.

When watching Nancy Grace for her sixty minute segment, she was discussing the life and death of Michael Jackson.Michael Jackson is a well-known pop star who could sell out any venue he held a concert in and a well-known humanitarian. He has given more money to charities than any other stars, he have been awarded humanitarian awards for the different works he have done with kids in different parts of the world. He used his fame to attract attention to different causes around the world. Michael Jackson was also a musical genius. In the sixty minutes segment Nancy talked to two Lawyers and two analyst. Nancy was passionate about getting to the bottom of the early death of Michael Jackson when just hours before he did a full 4 hour rehearsal. Many people seeing Michael Jackson prior to his death said he seemed to be in great shape.

His friends and trainer Lou Ferrigno (he played the Hulk in the television series in the 70's) mentioned that Michael was in great shape. At the time of observing Nancy Grace show, it was not confirm if the private physician seeing Jackson was responsible for his death. In the news story, Nancy Grace took a strong stance saying Michael Jackson was killed due to medical malpractice and the fact Michael's private physician had given him all sorts of prescription drugs. Everyone is claiming Michael was addicted to strong sedatives. Nancy stated on the show she never heard of someone being addictive to Diprivan.

Diprivan is a drug used to put patients in a deep sleep to perform procedures and other surgeries. The medicine dissipates from the system at a rapid pace if not continued. Diprivan has to be administrated in a continuous basis or the patient will wake up. Doing the sensational news coverage about Michael Jackson, Nancy stuck to the facts about Michael's life and death. She did seem a little biased because she did not believe the doctor was innocent of any wrong doings. She thought the doctor's actions were suspicious: The doctor would go into hiding, leaving his car; the doctor did not accompany Michael to the hospital and would not sign the death certificate. Nancy reported only facts. She did not distort any of the facts, and she was truthful in her coverage. She stuck to the journalism ethics code which is to seek and report the truth.

Nancy Grace show just like any other news show has sponsors. Sponsors make commercials to be shown doing the news coverage and sometime included in the coverage in a tasteful way. Several of the commercials in the sixty minute segment caught my attention. When Nancy was getting ready to go on breaks, she read statistics about burglary and assaults in homes. Then she mention a security company called Broadline, then a commercial came on about Broadline. The commercial featured a woman getting home from a date with a new suitor. The setting was night time and heavy rain showers making it very hard to see if someone is watching. Lurking in the bushes was the woman's ex boyfriend; he watched her go into the home and her date drive away. As soon as the car drove away he kicks in her front door and acts as if he was going to attack her but he was starred by the alarm and ran away. She receives a phone call from Broadline security because her alarm went off. She told them her ex-boyfriend kicked in her door; they told her police was on their way.

This particular commercial related to what Nancy mention in the statistics. The next commercial observed was a lawyer office offering service in lawsuits for wrongful death, medical malpractices, accidents and workmen compensation. This commercial related to the story because Nancy and others she had on her show believed Michael was killed due to medical malpractice. A Larry King commercial was shown mentioning his attendance to the Michael Jackson Memorial service and the expected huge turnout. Black in America was another commercial played doing this segment. This series is about the different point of view living in American and being black. The commercial related to the news coverage of Michael Jackson because he is black, lived during some of America darkest hours and went through many prejudices.

Commercials are closely related to the current events because the audience is in tune with the news coverage. When something unrelated to the story comes on the television then users automatically tune unrelated subjects out. Making commercials closely related to the news coverage will bring new customers. Nancy Grace coverage was ethical, interesting and well reported. So well reported many would think she was a Michael Jackson fan. The findings of this observation conclude news and advertisement is closely related.
