How to Be Nice to Rude People

Keeping Cool when Others Push Your Buttons

Rude people are a fact of life and dealing with them is often tricky. No one knows for sure what causes a person to be rude but it is possible to avoid being rude right back. The first instinct is sometimes to out do them. We have to learn how to be polite and patient even when faced with the rudest people that we could ever have imagined.

As we approach the holidays stores become increasingly crowded and tempers start rising. There is pushing, shoving and snatching everywhere we look. Manners become more important than ever during these times. Little things such as saying "please, thank you, or excuse me" can help to remind others of their manners. Keeping in mind that we are all human will help as well during these times. We should also remember to treat others the way we ourselves would like to be treated.

Smile at them even though they are being rude. Keeping in mind that the rude person before you is only human is helpful. They make be having a bad day or going through a tragedy. A kind word accompanied by a smile may just put them in a good mood. You never know when your politeness might be contagious.

Make an effort to offer assistance with the door when you see someone with their arms full. It can put some people in a bad mood to have their arms overloaded and no one offering assistance. No one likes to have an armful of packages with people rushing around them as they drop things. We've all had that day. You know the one, you run out of hands long before you have what you need. Your arms feel like they are about to break; you are dropping everything and no one offers to help. In fact they look at you like you are in the way. Now that is enough to make almost anyone begin to act rudely.

Make an attempt to allow people to pass you walking through the store. Hogging the entire isle is rude in itself. Shoving is never appropriate. Say something to them. Ask them not to shove, they may realize that they are being rude and stop. Being courteous is the best way to deal with rude people. Make sure to smile at them and be mindful of your tone of voice. Do not raise your voice at them but keep your tone nice and calm.
