How to Make a Nightlight Switch Plate Cover -- Easy Craft Project

Use Glow in the Dark Polymer Clay for a Fun Night Light

Peggy Hazelwood
This easy craft project will give off a subtle glow in your bedroom. Use glow in the dark polymer clay to create this fun night light switch plate cover. Let the kids help with this easy craft and make one for each of the kids' rooms too.

You'll need the following supplies:

- Glow in the dark polymer clay
- Light switch cover
- Pasta machine or hand brayer
- X-Acto knife or other cutter
- Polymer clay to decorate the switch plate cover

Step 1: Hand kneed the day in the glow polymer clay. I used Sculpey Premo brand but any kind should work fine. Run the clay through the pasta machine to create a thin sheet of clay.

Step 2: Drape the clay over the light switch cover. Make sure it fits around the entire cover. Press out any air bubbles working from the inside and push to the outside. Trim any extra clay as you would a pie crust. Cut out the holes for the two screws and for the light switch.

Step 3: Make designs with other colors of polymer clay. I used purple, blue, and pink and cut stars and flowers to use to decorate the nightlight switch plate cover.

Step 4: Place the designs on top of the layer of glow in the dark clay in a design you like. Use texture sheets to dress up the designs, if desired. Be sure to leave a good deal of the glow in the dark clay showing so it will indeed glow in the dark.

Step 5: Bake the light switch cover according to package instructions. About 30 minutes in a 275 degree Fahrenheit oven should work. Bake longer if the polymer clay is thicker than 1/4 inch.

Step 6: Let cool. Take the light switch plate out of the own and let it cool before hanging it on your light switch.

Tips: The more light the glow in the dark nightlight gets, the brighter and longer it will glow in the dark.

This is a cool idea. You can roll clay with a sturdy, smooth drinking glass too. Just roll it on its side.
