First you have to decide who you want to make the blanket for. The following guide gives you a general idea of how big to make a blanket for a specific type of person. The size is not an exact science, so go with what works best for the receiver of the blanket.
Adult Blankets - 2 yards
Kid Blankets - 1-1/2 yards
Toddler Blankets - 1 yard
Baby Blankets - 1/2 yard
Secondly, you need to purchase your supplies. You will need the following;
2 pieces of fleece
I suggest scoping out local fabric and craft stores for sales or clearance items. Fleece can be rather expensive, especially pattern styles, and finding good deals is very important. Sometimes fabric stores offer coupons in the paper, so watch for those. Wal-Mart also has some great deals.
1 pair of sharp scissors
Cutting with dull scissors will tire your hands out and make the process of creating a blanket take much longer than necessary. A good pair of scissors will do a world of good if you plan to make quite a few blankets over a period of time. I have a pair of sheers that were $17 at Wal-Mart and I would never go back to using the cheap $2 ones.
Options supplies: Tape measure and pencil. If you are just starting out, these items might be useful to you. I never use them because I can 'eye' where I need to cut.
Now, you can begin making your blanket!
1. Lay the two pieces of fabric together, flat on the floor.
2. Trim the salvage (machine cut edges).
3. Cut 4 inch squares out of each corner.
4. Cut 1 inch strips from corner to corner.
5. Go around and double knot each strip.
Then you are done!!! Easy, right? The measuring tape and pencil will help you mark where you need to cut if you do not feel comfortable free handing it.
You can also wash your fabric before making the blanket to rid of the chemical scent. Another option is to spray it with fabric softener and toss it in the dryer. Remember to use delicate cycle and low heat when drying. Fleece is durable but you do not want to tear it up.
Blankets aren't the only thing you can make. Be adventurous and try pillows, burp cloths, and scarves, too! Good luck and happy tying!
