How to Make No-Sew Lace and Satin Heart Shaped Sachets for Valentine's Day

Agnes Farside
Drawer sachets make great Valentine's Day gifts for your mother, a favorite teacher, or a special female friend. They not only smell great, but also provide a useful purpose and can be designed to add elegance to the inside of a dresser drawer. Heart shaped lace and satin sachets require very few materials and are easy to make, as there is no sewing involved, unless you choose to add a few stitches.

Items Needed to Make a Lace and Satin Sachet

-Lace (closely knit) (at least a five inch by five inch square, your choice of color)
-Lace ribbon (enough to go around edge of heart, one-half inch wide, your choice of color)
-Satin (at least a five inch by five inch square, your choice of color)
-Heart pattern to fit on fabric squares (can use a stencil or large cookie cutter)
-Fabric Glue
-Scissors
-Three small satin or silk flowers (one-fourth inch round, color should match or contrast the satin fabric, can be purchased at craft stores)
-Potpourri (your choice of scent)
-Satin or silk ribbon (five inches long and one-fourth inch wide, your choice of color)
-Needle (optional)
-Thread (optional)

Instructions to Make a Lace and Satin Sachet

Using a heart stencil or cookie cutter, trace the pattern on the wrong side of the lace and satin fabric and cut it out. Lay the satin heart on a flat surface wrong side up. Apply a thin line of glue all the way around the heart, one-half inch from the edge. Carefully pour the potpourri into the center. Spread the potpourri out to the glue on the edges, but try to avoid getting any in the glue. You do not need a thick piling of the potpourri, just enough to make the sachet a little puffy. You can put the potpourri down first, before the glue, if that works better for you. Before the glue can dry, position and place the lace heart, right side up, over the potpourri filled satin heart, matching the edges. Firmly press the edges together all the way around and let the sachet thoroughly dry.

NOTE: If you prefer to sew edges, put hearts together and sew all the way around, leaving a small opening for inserting the potpourri.

Next, turn heart sachet over and on the satin side, apply a thin line of glue along the seam edge all the way around and fold the edge over the glue. This is to help cover any raw edges. You will only fold to the edge to the first glue line, not past it. Let this completely dry.

Still working on the satin side, apply another thin line of glue to the folded seam all the way around and then attach the lace ribbon. The ruffle side of the lace ribbon should be facing outward. Let this completely dry.

Make a simple bow with the five-inch satin ribbon and glue to center of satin side heart sachet and let dry (trim ends to appropriate length). Right above the bow, glue the three satin flowers and let dry.

Your lace and satin heart shaped sachet is ready to wrap and give to that special Valentine.
