1. Get a flu shot- This is one of the most important steps you can take. It is fairly easy to find a place that gives them, and you will be thankful later that you got one. Although it may not prevent you from getting the flu; your body will be much more prepared and you will find that you will not get very sick for very long.
2. Wash your hands- Seems pretty obviously right? Well now take however often you wash your hands now and double that. Washing your hands is crucial to keeping potential germs from getting into your system. You can also carry around hand sanitizer. Get a small bottle and carry it with you at all times. Better to act like a germ a phobic then to get sick. Use it after shaking someone's hand or after touching objects that others would have touched such as a door handle.
3. Take in lots of vitamin C- Vitamin C really helps your immune system. Start taking a tablet daily now. I would recommend taking it year round to keep your immune system, but at least take it during the flu season.
4. Don't get coughed on- Yes you may appear rude, but you do not want to be coughed on. If someone routinely coughs without properly covering with their elbow then do not be around them. It is really ruder that they are not respecting you.
5. Get your sleep- Sleep is essential to being able to keep your body as 100%. Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep a night. If you are feeling sick then sleep more. This way your body will be able to fight of sicknesses more easily.
6. Don't stress about catching swine flu- Worrying too much about becoming sick can actually make some people sick. It is not a myth; it is actually possible because the body is not running at 100% when you stress out about something. If you are doing all these steps to your best ability you will be fine if you get sick. Remain confident that you will rid yourself of the sickness very quickly.
7. Stay home- If you don't have enough energy to function in a manner that your employer or instructor would expect of you then you should probably stay home. Not only are you doing others a favor by isolating your germs, but you are giving your body a better chance at fighting of the virus.
8. Drink lots of water- Water helps to keep your system running strong and it also helps flush it out. Make sure to keep well hydrated so that your body runs at its peak.
9. Go to the doctor- Go to the doctor as soon as you start getting sick. Many people like to try to wait it out, but this can easily lead to a much more severe sickness. If you catch it early you will get rid of it sooner.
