How Not to Fail in School

In order to become a successful student, you must develop a positive mental attitude, be an active learner, manage your time judiciously, and ultimately develop a few potent study techniques. The process should be applied both in the classroom and out of the classroom. It is a daily and continuous process. Seven steps will guide you through it. You must pay attention to every single step for the method to positively work.

Let's start with the classroom where it is important to have all your supplies (books, textbooks, notebooks, papers, pens, pencils, and so on) required for each specific subject. The classroom is also the place where you interact with others students and definitely with the teacher- providing diverse personalities. Do not be prejudice or judgmental; stay away from negative thoughts such as "I don't like this teacher", "this is a boring class", or "this is not the place for me". Doing so, you negate your learning interest and eventually inhibit your effort of learning. Instead, you should have a positive mental attitude, an open mind, and avoid those negative musings, Interact with your classmates and instructor. It is not always easy. I admit. But you must overcome people's lack of communication skills and anti-social behavior.

During class, be alert and focus. You must avoid distractions. Turn your cell phone off. Avoid chatting with your neighbor or writing a love missive to your partner while the teacher is explaining a theory or a concept. You should ask questions. You will be surprised how much even a "stupid question" can clarify nuance and doubt. You should not be shy when you want to understand; there is no stupid question.

At the same time, you must take notes. Class notes are valuable because they provide you with a blueprint for study when you prepare for an exam. You must participate in classroom discussions. You must be actively involved in class activities designed to reinforce your knowledge or intellect, which afterward will be assessed. When taking a test, remember to relax and to read the material carefully before answering the questions. After completing the examination, you should review your answers before you hand your work over to the teacher.

In addition to the steps mentioned above, you should reinforce your knowledge at home. This is the hardest part because you have no teacher's authority or supervision. You are on your own. First of all, it is crucial that you wisely manage your time. Besides your job (if you work), plan all your activities around your studies. Dedicate at least the same amount of time spent on a subject in class to your study out of the classroom. You might be tempted to totally escape from your books after a tiring day of class, to socialize with family or friends, or become distracted by some gripping video games or enticing television shows. Every time this temptation arise, you must ask yourself the following questions: "How is this related to my goals?", "How much time will I waste by doing that?" Always focus on your priority.

You must also know how to say "no" to persons or things that might drift you away from your priority. Do not feel guilty about not spending time with family or friends. Make weekly or monthly calendars that respect your goals but allow you to physically exercise on a routine basis. Exercising (walking, jogging, swimming, tennis, yoga, ...) expends your nervous energy, clears your mind, and makes you mentally alert. You should also eat properly to create a physical balance.

Follow the schedule that you set up; it is important, preferably within forty-eight hours after class, that you review your class notes. Go over what you have seen in class earlier. Go over corrections made in class to exploit your mistakes. Do your homework and plenty of exercises related to the topics discussed in class. Use libraries, the Internet, and others sources of information to boost your education. Brainstorm with some of your peers in small study groups to alleviate your weaknesses.

While studying, you should limit or eliminate distractions (phone calls, video games, television, radio, music, and so on). You should rather take breaks: a ten to twenty minutes break hourly should be enough. This will improve your ability to concentrate. Do not put off or postpone what can be done now to a future time. You cannot buy time. You only increase anxiety by trying to beat the deadline.

Finally, you must prepare efficiently for class. Use the course online or ask the teacher about the topic for next class. This gives you the advantages of flirting with the upcoming chapter before the date. You do not have to read every detail, but focus on the highlighted information. Take notes and make a list of the questions you may want to ask in class.

Applied scrupulously, these principles and steps should tremendously help all students. Any student eager to succeed should be able to metamorphose himself/herself into a successful one. The effort is priceless and affordable. You just need to develop a positive mental attitude, manage your time adequately, and develop some effective study techniques.
