With the holidays approaching many families feel the financial pressure of trying to make the best of the holidays during tough economic times and spending money to provide Christmas presents. Rather than stress out and spend money you don't have this might be the season to sit down with immediately family members and create a new plan of action for new and improved ways to celebrate the holidays.
For parents of little kids the pressure of the holidays may not be as great as they can selectively provide Christmas presents for children from an age group that may not be as demanding. But for parents of teenagers who generally desire the latest electronic products and trendy clothing, this just might be the year to share the reality of the economic crisis.
Unfortunately there is so much hype related to the holidays that consumers especially parents feel the pressure of trying to provide the best and buckle to the request of children for expensive gifts only to put themselves deeper in debt. Rather than add to your stress level explain to your child where you enjoy providing well for them in order for life, shelter and food to be a constant after Christmas, that this holiday season the focus of Christmas is family and the true meaning of the season.
Plan a holiday celebration where you can engage your teens in decorating and preparing the holiday feast. Do try to get them a favorite gift that they want and can appreciate but don't buckle to demands that ultimately put the entire family in financial upheaval after the holidays. Not only is this unrealistic but it is also unhealthy for everyone involved.
Another option is to plan an untraditional Christmas holiday season and do something you have never done as a family. If times are extremely tough and you get invited to someone else's home, accept the invitation and bring something with you so you know you too contributed to the feast. Create unusual family contest either indoors or outdoors or both. Another great option is to get one large family gift that everyone can enjoy every day of the year. Get creative, stay sane and don't get deeper in debt because after the holidays the reality of your decision will hit home.
