Ditch the Claus and Stork stories. We are all surrounded by people telling their children that presents come from Santa Claus on Christmas Eve and that babies are delivered to our doorsteps by storks. Never mind the fact that mommy says that there is a baby inside of her, and when the baby has arrived she is suddenly not fat anymore. Never mind the fact that nobody older than the age of ten believes in Santa Claus. As if children would have faith in this discrepancy of information.
Explain what other children have heard. Before you go telling your children the truth, consider how polite it would be to not blow anyone else's cover. Explain to your children the stories that other people tell their children and, of course, why they do it. This will help your kids to not reveal information too soon that other parents have guarded so carefully. Explain that other people like to make Christmas extra special so they infuse the season with some magic by telling their children about Santa Claus. Inform your kids that discussing where babies come from is only to be talked about between parents and their own offspring, and that if they have any questions, they should ask you, not their friends.
We love our family and love giving gifts. Tell your children that you love your family and that one of the ways to show your family love is to give gifts. Explain how much fun it is to surprise other people and that it is so exciting to go to the store and buy goodies for all of your family and friends. They will receive gifts too, but they must not be greedy, or other people will not think that they are grateful for their thoughtful gifts and will not want to give them anything else.
Where babies come from... Babies come from married people who love each other very much and really want a baby to grow in mommy's tummy. So these married couples get down on their knees every night and pray that God will give them a new baby. At this point, you can explain breast milk and nursing and everything else baby related. After they are of an age where you feel comfortable telling them about sex, explain the sexual organs of men and women again, men have sperm and women have eggs, and that the two combined makes a baby. Minimal discussion can be made about sexual intercourse until they are of preteen years, in which case it is pretty important to make sure that they have this information down thoroughly.
Talking to your kids about sex and Santa Claus may seem like a big deal to you. It is not. Kids are resilient, learn quickly and definitely know when they are being lied to. Make sure that your word is as good as gold with your children by always being honest with them.

Post a CommentI wouldn't tell my daughter the pretend version about babies either. While we haven't gotten into the intercourse part yet ( she's seven} she does know her anatomy. Boys have penises and girls have vaginas. Babies grown inside the womb and come out the vagina when they are ready to be born. Telling a child the baby grows in the belly is a big mistake. Same with the praying and being married part as it is also a lie. It's ok to leave out information until they are ready but making up stuff that is simply not true serves no purpose except to create confusion later on at which point you finally tell the truth or pile more lies on top of the fist ones.
