I just wanted to share my strategies for getting through all the other writers' articles here on AC. I hesitated to write an article about this subject, as the last thing I wish to do is hurt anyone's feelings. I think the people I've met on AC are an amazing, talented group of people. I am ever thankful for each and every one of them and the enormous amount of knowledge I have learned from their articles!
I receive over 50 emails per day, sometimes from AC so if I did not have a strategy, I'd never have time for my own writing and projects. It amazes me that people have similar "mail" to get through on social networking sites in addition to regular email. I can't fathom how you all get anything done! I guess most people don't sleep eight hours a night. I'm selfish that way!
Ok, here is my strategical list:
1. I only read one article per day from each contributor I'm subscribed to. (I have about four exceptions-you know who you are-but I refuse to let anyone else into that inner circle!) So I read the titles and push delete until I have the ONE article for that day! (Ok, sometimes I read two-but I try to stick to one article!)
2. I try NOT to read any articles from others until nighttime, when I am too fried to write. I try to stick to this rule so that I keep my best time for me. Of course, that means my comments have a lot of typos (I get dyslexic when I'm tired)! The only thing I do during the day is delete multiple articles from the same AC source.
3. I allow myself to skip a day totally, here and there! It is good for my soul and my sanity!
Since I am not as prolific as most AC sources, I absolve my guilt of not reading all their work by rationalizing that I read much more of their material than they will EVER read of mine!
4. Lastly, if the title turns me off, I don't read it-no matter who wrote it! For example, I'm not into sports-period!!!!
I hope some of these tips help you regain some sanity! I'm sure there are many others, but these work for me.

Post a CommentHello Danielle, we haven't met. You answered a question I had in an AC article I wrote called "Are You 4D on AC?" Definitely thanks for the tips. I don't have half as many favs, but they are growing. Need to know how to balance.
Great tips here. I need to follow them.
I used to really obsess over trying to be "fair" to everyone, but you know, it can be impossible to do and still have a career/life. I greatly appreciate everyone who reads my articles, but I don't want people to read out of any sense of obligation. I would hope that they would read because the subject was of interest to them! Anyway, I suppose it helps that this is a side thing for me and I'm not publishing every day... :-)
Loved this! I've been feeling guilty for so long because I haven't been able to get to HUNDREDS of unread articles, and you have just lifted the weight from my shoulders. GREAT tips. I love your strategies.
Sensible strategy.
I work a full time job and there is no way I can keep up with all of the e-mails, just do what I can and also try to look out side the box and see stuff by people that I'm not a fan of as well.
You are right Danielle, it can be very stressful trying to keep up with everyone's articles. There are only so many hours in a day, and they can't all be spent in front of the computer reading (or writing!). We can only do what we can do. Thanks for sharing.
These are great tips. It can be very intimidating. Thanks for them and for reading my articles. ;o)
It's important to find a way to balance your time.
Danielle--you hit the nail on the head. I don't "follow" anyone. I was getting anxiety just from the notifications in my email. What I do is periodically click on my favorites and read all the articles they've written that sound interesting. Like you I don't want to offend anyone but I have a job outside the house, I sell on ebay, I write reviews on SavvySpot and I write here...along with everyday life. You are doing what you need to do to keep your sanity :-)
