If you are making a cake that is shaped as a one it is very easy to do. First you will need a 13 inch by 9 inch cake pan, one cake mix, eggs, oil, and water, for the cake mixes, non-stick cooking spray, two tubs of frosting, and food coloring. You will need to preheat your oven to 350 degrees. You will then need to mix your cake mix according to the directions. Next you will need to spray your pan generously with the cooking spray. This will eliminate a problem when you go to flip the cake out of the pan. You will then pour the mix into the pan and bake the cake mix until it is done. You can check the cake by inserting a clean toothpick into the center of the cake. If the toothpick is clean the cake is done. If it comes out with wet cake mix, the cake is not done and needs to be baked longer. When the cake is done, pull it out of the oven and let it cool for 15 minutes. Then you will need to flip the cake out onto a cake board or a cooking sheet covered with foil. Let the cake completely cool for at least another 45 minutes.
When the cake is cooled you can trim the cake to make it look like a one. I have included a pattern to show you approximately how to trim the cake. After you have trimmed the cake you can start icing the cake. All you need to do is tint on tub of frosting with the food coloring to get whatever color you want the cake be. You will start frosting the cake with some of the frosting. You will do one coat completely which will be a frosting coat to capture the crumbs. It only needs to be a thin coat. You will then put the remainder of frosting that you tinted on the cake. It will then be more attractive because you will not have crumbs showing. You can then tint the other tub of frosting to make an accent color. You can then decorate the one as needed. You will now have a completed cake in the shape of the number one.
You can also design a number one using cupcakes. It is very easy to do so; you just make cupcakes using a cake mix. Then use the cupcakes to form a number one. You can then tint frosting whatever color you want. Then just frost the cupcakes all together. You can then decorate them more with an accent color. You can make any shape with cupcakes; you just need to move them to form the figure you want. This is an easy way to form a number one for your baby's party.
Either way you choose will work to form a number one cake. The cupcakes can be served a little easier because you can just pull them apart and serve. Each of these is easy to make. Just have fun with it and enjoy your baby's first birthday!
