How Obama Got Elected Blames Media for Misinformed Voters

Robert Dougherty
After Barack Obama won the election, people came up with various reasons why he did it. They credited Obama's win to the economy, McCain's ties to Bush, a rejection of Republicans, and a myriad of other reasons. But a new documentary proposes another reason why Obama won, and it is a typical theory from the right. How Obama Got Elected argues that the media tricked a gullible public into voting for Obama.

Media bias on behalf of Obama is a common talking point, and discussions of it may have kept Hillary Clinton alive for as long as she was in the primaries. How Obama Got Elected takes it one step further.

According to the How Obama Got Elected website, "the news media, completely enamored with Obama, simply refused to do their job." As proof, the website displays a video where 12 Obama voters are questioned on Election Day about why they voted for Obama.

The film makers get several of the voters to admit they don't know which party controls Congress. When asked about several gaffs Obama and Joe Biden made on the campaign, most of them thought Sarah Palin said them.

For further proof of their argument, the How Obama Got Elected site displays a Zogby poll where most of the 512 Obama voters questioned couldn't name Obama's controversial comments, but most of them named Palin's.

According to the site, 81.8% of questioned Obama supporters didn't know about Joe Biden's plagiarism scandal in the 80's. 88.4% didn't know of Obama's comments about the coal industry, and 56.1% didn't know of the charge that Obama kicked off his career at Bill Ayers' house. Yet more than 80% knew of Palin's wardrobe costs, her pregnant daughter and those "I can see Russia from my house" comments.

To the film makers, this is evidence that the media covered up or played down Obama's mistakes and shortcomings, while deliberately playing up Palin's and McCain's so they would lose.

The preview video of How Obama Got Elected is already making the rounds on Youtube, though the website doesn't say what else will be on this documentary, or when and how it will be released. However, How Obama Got Elected is certain to rejuvenate arguments about and against media bias, especially by Republicans.

But they can also make the argument that their case is more about how uninformed voters can be if the media doesn't do their due diligence. Their polls and videos can back that up, although they only selected a small test group of Obama voters. If the How Obama Got Elected directors talked to 512 more Obama voters, they might give different answers to their questions.

But, lucky enough for their case, they didn't find those smarter voters- for some reason or another.

I'm sure EVERY McCain voter was and is completely informed on every issue. Just as everyone who voted for Shrubya in 2004 is a policy expert. The media shilled and covered up for Bush for how many years on such issues as WMDs in Iraq? Sore losers. Tell them the same thing they said in 2004: "your guy lost, get over it"

Hmm. I wonder what mush-brained responses the filmmakers would have received had they questioned those who voted to reelect Geo. Bush 43 in 2004?

Oh whatever. It's easy to find ignoramouses in this country. I'm sure I could find 500 hundred people (in the south) who voted for McCain just because Obama was black. I could've also made this movie about George Bush, who lied and stole elections. Or how about the media's complicity in allowing Bush to go to Iraq on lies? Boohoo republicans. You lost at your own game. If you're looking for someone to blame, try a mirror.

Two of those three things they "didn't know about" are lies. Obama's "comments" about the coal industry were deliberately taken out of the context of a longer passage which says the exact opposite of what the GOP was trying to make it *seem* like he said, and Obama did not "kick off his career" in Bill Ayers' house.

And as far as "media bias towards Obama": were that the case, that Jeremiah Wright foolishness wouldn't have gotten a quarter of the airplay that it actually did.

Some people shouldn't have access to video cameras. Seriously.

    continuation...

And, by the way, the obvious bias and spin of your piece is a perfect example of what the How Obama Got Elected directors are exposing - shills like you spreading misinformation to further your own political agenda. You're not a journalist, you're a whore.

    Dougherty,

You don't even have your facts straight. The How Obama Got Elected directors didn't select a small test group of 512 Obama voters. They interviewed 12 Obama voters who were leaving the polls and were selected by an African American woman.

They paid Zogby to do a telephone poll and ask a much larger group of Obama voters the same twelve questions they asked the dozen Obama voters they interviewed, which resulted in 512 Obama voters being interviewed across the country.

And your conclusion entirely misses the point and power of the poll - they weren't cherry-picking the Obama voters, they were selected at random and across the nation by Zogby International. Luck had nothing to do with it. On average, those 512 represent the run-of-the-mill Obama voter. Pick any 512 in the same way and you'll get the same results. Nice try though.

And, by the way, the obvious bias and spin of your piece is a perfect example of what the How Obama Got Elected directors are exposing -

Wow man! A biased "documentary". Jeeze, leave it to those evil, sneaky Republicans to come up with such an idea. Oh, wait, that fat liberal windbag Michael Moore invented and perfected the genre.
