Step 1
Join a minority organization. As a member of a minority organization you will be among the first to know of grants available to a particular minority group. Helpful guidelines and inside tips about receiving a grant can also be had by belonging to such a group. To find a minority organization you can search on http://www.ncaied.org or http://www.minorityprofessionalnetwork.com/organization.htm
Step 2
Search online. A host of websites will offer lists of government grants. They will also allow you to search based on certain parameters, such as minority status. Two examples of such a website include www.grants.gov and www.business.gov. You can enter in a specific keyword to find relevant government grants. Each grant will show how much the grant is for, who it is for, and how to obtain the grant. The application may even be available for download.
Step 3
Gather your information together. Some grant applications will require written documentation of your minority status and business information. Such documentation can include business receipts and contracts, business plans, expenses, birth certificates, social security cards and proof of address. You must include all documentation that is requested or your grant will be denied.
Step 4
Pay attention to details, especially when completing the grant application. A second set of eyes may be a wise thing to ensure you didn't miss anything and you following all directions. Be careful not to fold or crease the grant application. Always purchase a large envelope to place the completed application in and take it to the post office to ensure the postage is correct. Government grants have deadlines, so you will want to send your application well ahead of this date to be safe. There is no limit to the number of government grants you can apply for. By applying for more, you have a better chance of receiving one. A business grant for minorities may be your best option to get your business off the ground and running.
