Go online to www.ssa.gov. On the Social Security Administration website you can get answers to FAQ (frequently ask questions). You can also calculate your benefits and apply online for your Social Security Benefits.

Go to your local SSA office and get the answers you are looking for. You will get better help in person than being put on hold from a phone call.

Follow up if you need to. Whether it's in person at the local SSA office or on the phone, make sure you have the person's name and claim number assigned to your case.

Sometimes a person's situation is complicated and may require some legal help. If that's the case you can hire a lawyer to help you. The SSA has a cap on the amount of money a lawyer can charge you for their fees. You can find a lawyer through the AARP website. If you can not afford a lawyer then you are entitled to Legal Aide.
