How to Obtain Nigerian Passports

The Way to Get the New Nigerian Passport

W. A. Swan
Nigerian passports have become one of the easier passports to obtain since the introduction of electronic processing. While the requirements are still similar to what they were before electronic online processing, the system is now more efficient and easier to manage. Nigeria is one of many nations who now use MRP (machine readable passport) passports which makes their passport compatible with many European passports as well as the US.

Go to the Nigerian Immigration Service website listed below in the resources. This is the preferred method to use as stated by the Nigerian Embassy in the Netherlands. Click on the link to the passport application and select the type of passport you want, choosing between the Standard Passport and the Official Passport . Then click the button below the list to start the application.

Fill in the application on the screen with your information and check the box stating "I Agree" which says you are stating this information is true and correct. Then click the "Submit Application" button below. Print out the receipt of acknowledgment so you have a record of submitting the site receiving the application.

Click the payment button to pay the fee for the passport. You will need a credit card for this part. All Nigerian passports are now paid for via electronic payment and bank cards. Once your payment is accepted you can continue to the next step by clicking on the "Proceed" button.

Print out the required documents which are applicable to you. Make sure you print out the Guarantor's form as well. You will need a local government letter of identification, your birth certificate and a recent photo of yourself at the minimum. Other documents may include a letter from the parents of a minor under the age of 16, marriage certificates, a letter of appointment or a police report in the event of a lost passport; these are used for specific situations.

Take these documents and the completed application to the nearest immigration office to complete the process. You will have an interview with an immigration officer at that time. Upon successful completion of the interview you will be notified if your passport has been approved. If you have a Seaman's Book continue to the next step.

Use the same requirements listed in the first three steps above for a Seamans Book. The documents which are needed with the passport for a Seamans Book are a local government letter of identification, a birth certificate and the most recent color photos used in your old passport. Take these to the passport office of the embassy for the country you are in for further processing.
