An online website states that in the years 2002-2007, there were 89 deaths in Ohio for the ages of 4-8 years old and 21,000 injuries. Statistics like these are what sold the idea to the government that booster seats for this age group will make it safer for children. My question is, of all the statistics that are out there, which statistics are correct? Out of the 89 children that lost their life, how many had a lap belt, a shoulder belt, a booster seat, or nothing at all? The same for the 21,000 injuries? Is there statistics for those? What is the statistics for parents who children roam around their vehicle unbuckled versus parents whose kids are buckled?
Most of the comments posted by online viewers to articles posted on the web argue over safety and the cost of purchasing the booster seat, how much room is in their vehicle, or about how many kids people should have. Let's be practical, everything costs money, not every one lives in luxury, and some live comfortably without the added expense of new laws, and more new laws. For those who argue safety, of course your right. Safety is always a number one concern for parents. BUT, it's not just about safety and cost, it's the principle of the matter. Everything we do will someday be governed by the state or federal government for OUR protection. And every law produces a profit or a cost for everyone involved. We can not just keep making laws that provide safety on things that are a part of life. Accidents happened. What about the deaths of all of Americans? We should start making child safety everything for children and adults. Maybe we should put bowling alley bumpers on the curb sides, or safety locks on every door in the United States. Plug stoppers for every open hole, or better yet, we should all start wearing bright orange outfits that say caution, accident prone all over it!
Will this new law produce more jobs or just profit for the companies who produce the booster seats and the government who will enforce the law? Is this the type of jobs the New President was thinking when he said he will help make millions of jobs available in the near future?
Since the automobile industry wanted bailout money, maybe they can use it to help produce new vehicles that provide the booster seats already installed or offer replacement seats for cars already purchased. This would not only help the parents who have children in this age category, but also the auto industry. It could also help the unemployed get jobs, who can then have money to buy the PROTECTION the government thinks we all need from ourselves.
