In my online class through Michigan Virtual High School (MVHS) the teachers post to an announcement page, which is set up like a blog. This usually gives me updates on assignments, class information, etc. This is sort of nice because it keeps me up to date on what's going on in the "classroom".
I also really like the fact that almost all teachers set up a link ahead of time that gives you access to all of the assignments for the entire semester of the online class. You can finish your work as early or as late as you want. However, don't assume that all of the work will be easy just because it's an online class, I strongly recommend getting a good start on the work as early as possible. In the worse case scenario, you will finish early and have extra time to work on homework from other classes or sit around at home.
Discussion boards are also a great way to keep in touch with both your instructor as well as many other students in the "classroom". Of course, some students aren't going to want to take advantage of this feature, and this is understandable. I personally don't mind getting to know a few people in the process of taking my online class, but some may just want to get the work that they need to get done, done, and then continue on with their lives.
I would not recommend online courses to those who are not independent. The instructors expect quite a high level of independence in most cases, and if you're someone who finds yourself constantly asking the teacher questions, or needing additional help, you may want to stay in a classroom environment where you can do just that on a more easy basis. Of course the online instructors are willing to help you with your problems, but they don't want their inboxes flooded with messages from one student calling for help on basic instructions.
One great thing about online classes is that students have the option to take many classes that they couldn't otherwise take through your high school, middle school, or community college. If you're looking for a specific class that your school doesn't offer, try checking out the virtual classrooms that your school may pay for for you to enroll in.
Online classes are a great opportunity for higher-level classes, especially if you're looking into taking a foreign language class that you're school doesn't offer. Online programs are often great for those wishing to take language classes like chinese, japanese, german, or some of the other less commonly taught language classes in United States school curriculum.
Overall though, online classes are something that any student should look into, but they are definitely set up to benefit the students that work really well independently.
