dean qualls
Since the economic turmoil began in 2007, many folks have had their internet at home shut off. Millions of Americans are now without internet and the numbers are sky-rocketing alongside the economic downfall of today's society. With this turmoil, you don't have to do without. The library has computers that you can use to take care of anything you need to do on-line; everything from listening to music, to taking care of your bills, look for a job, or just look at your e-mail. Anything that you did to your personal computer at home, you can now do at your local library. This is a description on how you can use not only the library in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana, but any library in your area.
Here is the details on how you can use the computers at the Indianapolis downtown library.

With a library card

When you first come into the front entrance of the new library located at 40 East st. Clair, Indianapolis, Indiana, you will notice that the spacious five-story ceiling alone is enough to make your head spin. Don't fret, just start walking towards the escalator and take this up to the third floor. Remember, when you walk into the library here, you are already on the second floor.

After you clear the landing off of the escalator, take an immediate left, go around to the next side of the room, and there you will see a small alcove with two computers inside. Don't pay any attention to the first computer to the left, this is for printing. Go to the second computer and follow the directions on the screen. The first thing the computer will ask you to do is hit any key on the keyboard. You then click on the "next available PC" button. This will take you to the next screen , letting you reserve a computer. you type in your library card number. The next option is the best one. It will then let you reserve a PC on any floor in the library. If you are working on music, you can pick that floor to use the computer. if you are working on finances, you can use the PC on that floor, and so on. After you press the print button for your receipt, the print out will tell you what computer you can use and what time your session begins. The timer on the computer is set for one hour and the best experience about using the library for this service is, if you need to use the computer for more than an hour, you can extend your time. The library will let you extend your time for up to ten hours in a day.

Without a library card

The library is also equipped with a system that let's an Individual without a library card, to have access with the computers as easy as If they had a card. Numbers that are needed to gain access are located at the central information booth located on every floor. These numbers are used exactly like the numbers on a library card, and anyone can now use a computer. All you have to do is follow the same steps as one with a library card.

Overall

As with using any public place to get on-line, make sure you protect vital information though, and always pay attention to the timer on the PC. You don't want the computer shutting down on you in the middle of working out your financial records, or worse, being logged in with you password active. This happens alot to newcomers as well as people who just don't pay any mind to the timer, located at the top right corner. There are approximately 500 computers inside the library, but there are days in which there are 500 people wanting to get on the computer, so it's best to register for one when you first get there.
