How to Open And/or Convert a Docx File

Annie Jean Brewer
In Office 2007 Microsoft introduced a new file format for word processing documents called the .docx format. It is a standard XML file format that is now used by Microsoft instead of the venerable .doc format. Those of us with older versions of Microsoft Word or without Word entirely are challenged to find a way to open these documents when we stumble across them online. There are several methods available for opening a Microsoft .docx document.

Method 1
If you have an older version of Microsoft Word you can download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack at this link. According to the Microsoft website, this compatibility pack will enable users to "open, edit, and save documents, workbooks, and presentations in the Open XML file formats which were introduced to Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint beginning with Office 2007."

Method 2
Microsoft also offers a Word Viewer program for download that will enable users to "view, print and copy Word documents, even if you don't have Word installed." This download is available here.

Method 3
There is a website called Docx-Converter.com that will convert your .docx documents for free and email the converted file to you. They have the capability to not only convert them to .doc files, but also a variety of other file formats as well, including pdf and plain text.

Method 4
Google Docs has the capability to convert .docx files as well. Create an account with Google (Gmail, etc.) and then log in. Upload the .docx file and Google Docs will do the converting automatically and display the document on screen for you to read and/or alter as needed. If you want to download the file on your computer Google Docs has that capability under the File menu on the individual document. You can download them in a variety of formats including Microsoft's Word format.

Method 5
If you would like to have a program on your computer that will allow you to read and edit .docx files but don't have the money or desire to purchase Microsoft Office 2007 you can learn about and download Open Office by clicking here. This is a full-featured office program sponsored primarily by Sun Microsystems. It is an open-source program that is available for free download and use.
