How to Opt Out of FaceBook's "Places" Application

Safety First!

FaceBook Places is a new application that FaceBook has decided to add in. The problem with FaceBook is that they don't tell people when they are adding new items like this that could affect safety. Everyone should be aware of this application and know how to opt out of the program. The add on of this application is in response to FourWhere that allows people to "check-in" when they wherever they are at. This is probably one of the most unsafe practices people on the internet can be a part of.

How to opt out of FaceBook Places:

Step 1- Log into your FaceBook account and go to the account tab in the upper right hand of the page. Choose account settings.

Step 2- Scroll down the page to the Places heading. The boxes will be automatically checked.

Step 3- Click in both boxes for the settings to uncheck them.

Step 4- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the "save settings" button.

This will opt you out of the FaceBook Places application. I would highly recommend that you do not use this application. It is dangerous to let everyone in the world know where you are at any given time. If you use applications such as this, people know where you are at all times. If someone chooses to stalk you, this is one of the easiest ways for them to do so. It might sound like a lot of fun, but think of it this way, would you want people to know where you children are at all times? Probably not and with good reason.

We spend a lot of time teaching our children about the dangers of the internet and the people that are lurking there. This type of application could be just the ticket that these type of people are looking for. Talk to your children about this application and why it is so dangerous. This is an application that FaceBook should have never automatically assumed that it's users wanted because of the high risk of danger involved. The same goes for the phone number that you put into your profile. It will automatically load into your contacts phones. Go through all of your FaceBook settings occasionally to make sure that there are no new additions to the site that might invade your privacy. Don't make it easy for criminals to make you a victim.

Thank you. Yes, I realized that after it was already published. Not sure how I can get that changed, but duely noted that it is in fact FourSquare.

I think that you meant "FourSquare" instead of "FourWhere". Although, our FourWhere program will show checkins and location reviews from FourSquare, Gowalla and Yelp.
You can see it at http://fourwhere.com
