How to Order an Official Copy of Your Social Security Card

Lucy M
If you are anything like me you lose things. I usually say they are misplaced because I am so unorganized! I try to keep all my important papers in one place but something always happens and I don't remember to put things back.

This leads me to have to apply for duplicate birth certificates and Social Security cards. Luckily we can get these easily, though sometimes it can cost you money to get the copies (birth certificates).

Remember your social security number since they will ask you for this. Luckily you have to use this often for schools and hospitals so it should be easy for you to get.

Go online to the official site. http://www.socialsecurity.gov/ssnumber/
Do not go anywhere but the official site because other sites may try to charge you for this service.

Fill out form - SS-5 completely. You will need to bring this with you.

Find out where the closest local Social Security office is to where you live. You can find this out on the official website.

Bring proof of identity with you. They only accept originals or certified copies. Check the Social Security website for a current list of what is acceptable.

They do not take photocopies or notarized copies.

You write such common sense articles that are very practical in application (no pun intended). :-)
