How to Organically Kill Slugs in the Garden

Nick Mayer
Are you trying to grow an organic garden in your backyard, but there are slugs invading it? The easiest way to kill them off is by using nonorganic chemicals, but that would obviously compromise your organic garden. Contrary to what most might think, there are plenty of easy organic ways to kill slugs that are eating your garden.

Egg Shells - Slugs have a very delicate body and cannot come in contact with sharp objects. Egg shells obviously fall under this category and are conveniently organic. The slugs that come in contact with these shells will quickly either die or will stop invading your organic garden. Instead of throwing your egg shells in the garbage, try grinding up the shell and spreading it around your garden and your slug problem will be gone in no time. The shells even add calcium to the soil and plants, which make the soil much richer than it once was!

Beer - Yes, beer. There is yeast in beer and this is what attracts the slugs to it. Just pour a small amount of beer into a dish and set it somewhere in the garden and there will be many slugs dead in your dish! Despite what you might have heard, the slugs do not get drunk from the alcohol. Instead, they are attracted to the yeast in the beer then once they are in the dish, the alcohol destroys their slimy outer body and they soon will die. Here is a simple, yet organic way to kill off all the slugs in your garden.

Saliva- Actually, any salt rich liquid will do the trick, but your saliva is the most fun way to kill off the slugs. With any touch of the sodium rich fluid, the given slug will quickly shrivel up as the salt deteriorates its body. This way is obviously 100% organic and will quickly and easily kill off any slugs that might be a threat to your newly organic garden.

Certain Plants- An easy way to kill off any slugs in your organic garden is to start growing certain plants in your garden. Plants such as azaleas, rhubarb, marigold, or even zinnias will quickly rid your garden of any slugs the organic way. By just growing other plants in your garden, the slugs will be detracted from your luscious fruits and vegetables you might be trying to grow.
