The first step should be to go through all of your child's toys. Let them help you. It teaches them the correct way to organize and put things away. Get rid of any toys that are too young for your child's age group. Also, you'll want to get rid of any toys they no longer play with. Allow your child to go with you to donate the toys to kids who need them. (Tip: we always do this before birthdays and holidays)
Once you have gotten rid of everything that's no longer used, it's time to organize. First though, split the toys in half. Take half the toys and put them a storage bin. You child will still have plenty to play with and you can rotate the toys to keep them occupied.
For organizing, you can either purchase plastic bins or things like shoe boxes work well too. Plastic bins can be purchased fairly cheap and in a number of sizes. Sort the remaining toys into the bins. Label the plastic bins and put them on shelves. This makes it easy for the kids to get too and easy for them to put away.
After all of the toys are organized and the room is clean, make sure you sit down with your child and talk about how you can keep it that way. With older children you may want to make a chore list and reward them with an allowance. With younger children you can choose other ways to reward them. For example, a fun day out or a special treat works great with younger kids. It's also important that you make sure your child understands that there will be consequences if the room is not clean and what those consequences are. Following through is one of the most important things in parenting. Learning this not only keeps the kid's room clean, but teaches them responsibility as well.
