A trip to your local Container Store or Wal-Mart to purchase some containers to store things in is a good idea. Once you have bought a few of those it is time to get started. Start with the closet you most want to organize. Take a deep breathe, gently open the door, and take one step backwards. You can do this.
First of all take everything out of the closet. You are going to be surprised at what you find. Much of this is clutter and stuff you do not want or need anymore. Sort this into piles based on must keep, may keep, and do not want to keep.
It is understandable that some things have a sentimental value to you. Realistically everything in your closet does not fall into that category. Be honest and get rid of what you do no want to keep. Remember you are trying to get organized here. Put some of the things into the containers you bought. Others may need to be put into another location like the garage, basement store room, or crawl space. Don't just start moving things around.
To get your closet organized means utilizing the space you have. Organize clothes by color, season, or putting outfits together. If you have a lot of shoes consider buying a shoe rack. Adding a shelf for sweaters is a way to free up hanging space. If you are willing to spend some money you can build a closet organizer from wire items that would be the envy of the neighborhood.
This is your closet so you can organize it anyway you want. By eliminating items that are currently taking up space you are already getting better organized. The internet can provide some great ideas as well. Searching on Yahoo or MSN for closet organizing ideas will give you some diagrams to look at that you may not have thought of.
When it comes to how to organize a closet there is no right answer. When it doubt throw it out and go from there. Once you have the hardest closet done you can move on to the next one and so on until all of your closets are completely organized.
