How to Organize Community CPR Classes

Alicia Bodine
Taking the time to organize these classes within a community and get them started could just very well save someone's life. That would make the class worth all the preparation.

You will need:

CPR instructor
CPR dummies
Location
CPR certificates
Advertisements

Follow these steps:

Step 1:
Find a CPR instructor who will be willing to teach the class. You can start looking in the rescue squads as they are likely to have several qualified instructors. If you can't find one then you will have to place an advertisement for one in your local newspaper.

Step 2:
Have the instructor give you dates and times that they can teach the class. You will need this information before you can look for a location.

Step 3:
Find a location that can accommodate at least 50 people at a time. Most likely you will have less than this, but it is better to be prepared. Make sure that location is available on the dates and times that the instructor is available to teach. Some good choices are fire halls, school gymnasiums, or church halls.

Step 4:
Place an advertisement offering the class to the community. This should be done through all local newspapers. You may even want to let your local news station know about this so that they can mention it during the evening news. Radio stations can also advertise the class if you let them know it is available.

Step 5:
Make sure the instructor has printed out CPR certification forms. These forms are temporary until the CPR instructor has sent away for the real CPR certification cards for all those who have graduated from the class.

Step 6:
Hold the class and if it is successful offer it again.

Tips:
You may want to have one class for children, one for adults, and one for senior citizens. Each of these groups may need to be taught a little differently.

Warnings:
Only hire an instructor who is licensed to teach CPR and award CPR certificates.
