How to Organize a Ladie's Deer Camp

For the Women Who Want to Get Together and Enjoy a Satisfying Hunting Experience

Julie Boehlke
Every year the guys gather together to trot up to the north woods and sit around to tell campfire stories and get drunk. Ok, well maybe some go to actually find that 15 point Buck. But why do they never come home with one? What do they really do up there all week? Its so nice when they come home with a beard and smelling of campfire wood and beans. Not.

What happens when the wives ask to go? They usually get turned down and the guys preach up and down that it is just a guy thing and no women are allowed at their camp.

For all those ladies that love the outdoors like I do, I've come up with a solution. The time has come for all of us to band together and pack our bags and head up north to Deer Camp on our own.

There are a few rules and specifications if this is really going to work, so here it goes.

First off we must attend a Hunter's Safety course and obtain our Hunting licenses. If you want to actually shoot and kill a deer, then you will need a shotgun. If you don't have one, or don't want one, you can still come along, after all it will be fun. Most likely It will be very cold but it will be fun. A flask of Captain Morgan is a good idea to have on hand, this will keep you warm and fuzzy through those 30 degree evenings.

Now it's off to Cabela's for some savvy shopping!

I love Cabela's. They are the foremost outfitter for the sports enthusiast. Don't worry if you don't have a Cabela's near you, you can shop online at Cabelas.com.

Spending money on some neat hunting gear is always fun, a new winter coat, snow pants, gloves and a warm hat is a must. There is also some pretty trendy boots out there on the market too. I personally like the ones with the fur lining, but that really isn't too practical for the north woods, so Ill find some waterproof rubber ones.

You can get all of your supplies under one roof at Cabela's or really any other sportsman's shop if you choose to do so. From Sleeping bags to heaters you should be able to find what you are looking for.

Ok, so it's time to spruce up and pack the camper. Make sure you know how to unhitch and set up the camper on your own. Remember the guys are going to be back home. (Thank God) If all else fails resort to the owners manual.

Now back to the subject of packing of the camper. Make sure to pack of plenty of snacks and lots of bottled water. Chocolate is also something good to have on hand in case if the craving hits. Margarita Mix is also another essential for the lady hunter. Not to be mixed with hunting or handling a gun, but for the evenings when you are back at camp.

Comfortable chairs for around the campfire are also essentials. Don't forget to throw in the tripod grill and all cooking utensils you may need to eat with. Make sure to also pack some warm blankets for wrapping up and staying warm around the fire.

One of the other important things to remember to pack is all the warming essentials. Hot packs and Hot seats are a must. These are activated once they are opened and brought out of their packages ,they are good to have on hand as they really keep you warm for up to several hours at a time. Make sure to pack warm sleeping bags, extra blankets and warm layered clothing.

It may be a good idea to prepare some meals in advance like Chili and Soups. If you have a microwave in your camper that's great but if you are in the middle of the woods, you may not have electricity, only whats off the juice of the truck battery. Another option is to heat your meals with a Tripod Grill over an open fire.

It can be a challenge to camp in the winter especially if there is no electricity. I personally would not recommend camping without electricity. Especially in the winter. But you need to make the most of it. Go out and find the white tail deer you are after and show your husband up.

Don't forget that us girls love to have fun and that's what it is all about; spending time with your fellow female hunters and going out in the wild and having a good time.

Good article. It is really difficult for women to find other women to do independant trips. I finally got a group of woment together to go skiing and it lasted 2 years. One kept calling her husband and expected us to follow his advice...almost killed her, it would have been so easy...just screw up her binding and take her down a black diamond.

If there is no place to plug in my hair dryer I can't go :-)
