It would be a good idea to see which combination and intensity of lights create a warm atmosphere. If you do not already have them, consider putting some dimmers on your lights. Dimmers make possible any degree of light- from super bright level to complete darkness- and also allow you to adapt the lighting in the living room, dining room and even the bathroom if you choose.
Most hardware stores sell dimmers that require no wiring and will work on floor lights or table lights. Also, up lighting is more flattering than down lighting. Down lighting is any light that emits from the ceiling, so try to use table lamps, floor lamps and candles to provide the most light- that is up lighting- and use ceiling lights sparingly.
Spot lighting on your collections or artwork will add to the ambience and create conversation points as guests notice and start chatting about the painting that is spot lighted. Spot lights add to the feel of the room. The light catching a couple of plants or a small water arrangement takes the party atmosphere closer to the nature.
Nothing warms up the room like the glow of candles. Not only that, candle light makes everyone look more beautiful. It also makes the atmosphere romantic when intended. Candles are an inexpensive way to decorate your home for a party and there are so many ways to use them.
It would be lovely to scatter groups of candles in cut glass holders anywhere in the house where guests would be, in little nooks, on small tabletops as well as several clusters on the buffet. The candles reflect light and magnify the flame like a sparkling diamond, just like crystals.
One can also try mixing different sizes of candles, big pillar candles offset with tiny tea lights in glass holders, creating a combination of sizes and textures. However, be careful with scented candles. They are lovely to be used, but never near the food. Also, certain scents are overpowering. Try to avoid heavy florals and frilly sweet fruit scents as they could be cloying. It would be best to opt for clean, crisp scents like citrus, verbena and herbs. While using scented candles, avoid using other scented products, like air fresheners.
One final word on candles; remember to use them only when it is dark outside- unless they are on a birthday cake.
The atmosphere of the party is more important than the drinks you pour or the food you serve, or any other element for that matter. Your guests will absorb the ambience, or atmosphere, you create, whether they know it or not. That is why you would want to create a mood that is comfortable and welcoming. Lighting, candles, music, flowers and themed decorations might seem like small elements, but together these details help create the right ambience.
