How to Organize a Political Rally in Your Town

Hard Worker
The Democratic primary races are getting closer each day and the general election has already started, at least for John McCain anyway. One of the most fun things you can do if you are a political junkie is to organize a political rally. Political rallies are most often seen in areas where candidates are scheduled to speak or are going around to speak to people. However, it doesn't necessarily have to be so. Political rallies are very popular among college students and young voters, especially when a state has its primary day coming up. In late October, political rallies are a great time to raise political awareness about the upcoming election. So how exactly do you organize and plan a political rally?

The first step is that you need to contact the political party with which you are affiliated, which is usually the Democratic or Republican party. Tell them that you would like to set up a political rally in your town. But before you ask them that, you might want to ask if there are any scheduled political rallies that are about to take place in the upcoming weeks. Too many rallies can be a bad thing because if you have low turnout of people at the rally, it will be downright embarrassing for you. If there is already a scheduled rally, contact the rally organizers and ask them how you can help.

If no rally has been scheduled, you should ask the political party for advice and contacts for help on setting up the event. The political party will almost surely help you in your endeavor. The next step is to contact all political organizations in that area who would be interested in your cause or your candidate. You should contact single issue groups, College Democrats, Young Democrats, Democratic volunteer lists and anyone else who can help you out. The more people who you have helping you plan the rally, the better. With more people you can have more people help you spread the word about the rally and put up signs and have announcements about the rally.

The next thing you will need to do is accumulate rally signs. Get a broad mix of rally signs to mix it up. Ask the political party in your neighborhood for rally signs. If they don't have, then contact the candidate running for office for rally signs. They will be all the more happy to give them to you or give you the money to buy the rally signs.

The third thing you should do is contact the local media. Tell them about the event. The best way of doing this is through a press release. Press releases look professional and the important information will go at the top. During a slow news week a political rally should garner you a large amount of media coverage. This will only benefit the campaign.

Publicizing the rally is very important because you can put a lot of organizing and planning into the event but if no one comes you will look foolish. Have volunteers make announcements at their church groups, hobbie groups, college campuses, town hall meetings, and whatever else you can think of at the time.
