How to Organize a Vanity

Laura Leiva
Once the vanity is organized, you will spend less time looking for the things needed to get ready in the mornings or for an evening out. No matter what size vanity you have, make use of the space by staying clutter free and organized.

Take everything off of your vanity. This will help you make a fresh start to determining what you use on a daily basis, and what you can put away in bathroom cabinets. Combine all items that are alike to see what you have.

Throw away items that are used up, makeup that is dried out or items you have had longer than a year, as well as any lotions or hair products that have been around longer than six months. If you continue to use old makeup, hair or body products, the chemicals are no longer good, increasing your chances of skin irritation or bacteria growth in items like lip gloss or mascara.

Place items of everyday use back onto the vanity. Look into buying elegant tabletop drawers or organizers to keep everyday makeup in a simple-to-reach location, and place all other makeup that is used less often in a clear storage drawer to the side of the vanity. A portable organizer that has three drawers is useful to store less-used items. Place makeup in the top drawer, hair products in the second drawer and hair styling tools like hair dryers, curling or flat irons, and brushes in the last drawer.

Purchase a glass perfume tray on which to store your fragrances. A glass tray is not only an elegant vanity staple, but it also showcases the beautiful bottles of your perfume collection.

Straighten up the vanity each day to keep it neat and organized. If you use a bathroom vanity, there may be other people in the house who need to use the sink to get ready for the day. To keep the bathroom vanity organized, place everyday makeup in a small bowl or container on the countertop, and place drawer storage units into two drawers. In the first drawer, place any additional makeup you use less often and body products like lotion or sprays. In the second drawer, place your styling tools and hair products like mousse or hairspray to keep them off of the countertop. If your vanity does not have drawers, purchase a clear plastic two-drawer organizer to place under the sink for storage of your makeup or hair products.
