How to Get Organized: The Key to a Peaceful Home

The Power of Habit

Melissa B
Getting organized can be a tricky task. I myself struggle with getting things properly organized from time to time. For some organizing the small stuff is the problem, for others it's papers, and for some it may be everything!. Some people find they can't keep closets organized, others have catchall table tops filled with clutter, while others have that one drawer that is an endless mess in need of serious organization!

While keeping your self properly organized creates ease and less frustration, it is rarely the easiest of task to complete and keep up with. Staying organized may come as a second nature for some, but if you struggle with keeping things in place and organized - you are not alone!

The key to organization actually presents itself in that nice little word called habit. Struggling with organization may be as simple as getting in good healthy organized habits. For example, the mail is one of my biggest challenges. I often I have envelopes, both opened and unopened scattered on my desk, book case and kitchen "organizer" My solution was simple. I had to get in the habit of getting the mail and dealing with it on the spot. I will look through the circulars and toss what I don't need including junk mail. I file the bills and write the amounts and due dates on the calendar and put everything in it's place before I move on to anything else.

There are many helpful organizational tools found in office supply stores and even places like Walmart and Kmart. The problem is many of these "organizers" take a continual effort to proper upkeep. If you didn't make a habit out of utilizing these supplies, well than you just created more mess! There are a few items to help stay organized, which I can't live without because I really do use them. Other things look and seem helpful, but just don't get used regularly enough to be helpful and only end up adding to the clutter!

Deciding what works and what doesn't is an individual decision. For example, many find filing cabinets a great way to store important information, papers, bills, tax returns, bank statements, and other various documents. On the other side of that, there are those (like me) who completely fail at the filling cabinet. I take things out, don't put them back where they belong and tear the entire house apart trying to find one simple piece of paper. Which ironically enough tends to be in the filing cabinet, just in the wrong folder! I have learned that no matter what - the filing system does not work for me. I have found those folder books with five to ten folders all bound together by a spiral helps me tremendously to stay organized. Of course, this is not because the papers magically organize themselves, rather I have made it a habit to keep up with it and it works for me.

There is no quick fix to clutter, but it can be properly handled. As I mentioned above it is vital to create a habit, or routine which will give you time to do what you have to to keep things ion check. I always find my self extra irritable and aggravated when there is a mess, especially if the mess if preventing me from finding something I need at any given moment. Creating a clean home is a BIG step to creating a peaceful home!
