How Our Thoughts Define Our Destiny

Albert Adler
We need to learn how we define and generate related chains of thoughts. Let's assume we find something new. We look at it long enough until we say something like "I will call it such and such and it will serve me for certain purpose." We have defined it and gave it a name. Now whenever we look at it whenever we recall it the name and its function appears in our mind. In similar way when other people introduce a new thing to us and we remember it the way it's described above.

We generate related chains of thoughts when we interact with things and concepts. Those are associations that they make in our minds. For example when we hear word "apple" we have associations like: "smell of apple, summer, sun, juice etc." That is related chains of thoughts. I call it a chain when one word or concept pulls another concept. Also when one concept pulls the whole sphere of information related to it. In other words associated chains of thoughts are definitions of that word or concept.

Here is an example of how powerful associations are. Some time ago I met one man who suffered from osteochondrosis. He had attacks about twice a year. The disease was so bad he couldn't even move. In between of attacks he did his exercises and other stuff to prevent them. Nothing helped him. Seeing him suffer I was asking questions how it's like to be with such disease. At the same time I started to have pain in my neck area. I assumed it was due to my yoga exercises. Everything was fine until one day I though that it may be osteochondrosis. That was my final thought before acute pain hit me. I couldn't move for one week. I barely managed to get out of that state. That's the way name of disease and its associations influenced my mind and my body.

On one hand it feels secure to give definitions to things and events. On the other hand we always get trapped by definitions. From that time on I prefer to deal with pain directly and avoid calling the names of diseases. Now even if a name comes to mind it slides on the surface and leaves my mind. I don't allow it to take it's time there. I do it in other areas of my life as well and life became much easier.

As soon as we identify something as a problem the definition of this word triggers some processes in our mind. Associated chains arise and indeed we have to deal with a problem. As soon as we say to ourselves "obstacle" mind triggers the whole stack of information accumulated through our life experience and we have to deal with an obstacle that is challenging to overcome.

It is better to deal with what is without having to identify or name the situation. In this case we don't have to struggle. All we have to do is to deal with the natural situation that life presents us.

As soon as we say to ourselves "it's hard", "it's bad", we have to deal with hardship and bad situations in our life, since we already know from our experience what it means to be in a hardship. When we don't define a situation we don't allow the information from our subconscious mind to take control over our life. In this case we can be efficient in our actions. In such cases we do not see the situation as a annoyance but deal with it in a natural and efficient way.

When our mind always tries to define, label, judge, and makes associative chains it is called mind chatter. It is a function of mind to run without stopping. That's why the first step is to stop that chatter and look at the situation without a prejudice.
