How to Get Out of a Rut

Sabrina Martin
So, you're fed up with the same old thing day after day, after day. The boredom has got the best of you and you're ready for something new. Well, before you dive in head first, consider the following words of advice about getting out of a rut.

What are Your Motives?

The first thing you have to do is decide why you want to get out of the rut. The choice has to come from within you. It has to be something that you truly want for yourself. If you are making the decision because you think that you should that is not an effective place to begin. Sometimes we decide to make changes in our lives because we want to make someone else happy. Although wanting others to be happy is understandable, it isn't a firm basis for making personal changes.

If you want results that will last, begin by taking some time to quietly reflect on the reasons why you want to change. Be honest with yourself. Is the desire and motivation coming from deep within, or is it coming from someone else? It is essential that you ask and answer these questions.

Start with a Schedule

Although this might seem a little silly it can be one of the most effective ways to begin making desired changes in your life. When you are stuck in a rut it's because you've become so used to doing the same things and behaving in the same ways that they are now automatic. You get up in the morning and begin the routine without even thinking about it; It doesn't require thought or planning anymore. So, if you want to do things differently, it is a good idea to start out by deciding what you want to do and scheduling it.

You aren't in the habit of doing these new things yet, so treating them as if they are appointments that can't be missed will help you go through with them. It is too easy to talk ourselves out of things otherwise. And remember, you don't have to use the scheduling technique forever; it is simply a powerful way to make sure you take the steps needed in the beginning to get out of that rut.

Inform Someone of Your Goal

Sometimes letting someone else know about your plans provides you with motivation. When we only have to answer to ourselves it becomes easy to lose that enthusiasm and drive. This doesn't mean that we need someone to discipline us every time we fail to do what we said we were going to do. It just means letting someone else in on it, so that we feel a little more inclined to go through with it. You'd be surprised at how much more you are driven to succeed when you have an audience.

Reward Yourself

Set reasonable goals and make sure you reward yourself when you meet them. You need to have something to work for. If you put forth all of the effort to make changes and then don't see a reward for it, you'll lose heart. There is nothing wrong with treating yourself for you accomplishments. You deserve it.

It is important to keep in mind that every one falls into a rut at some point. Most of us are in some kind of rut right now. All we have to do is really decide that we want to make changes, take the necessary steps to do so, and remain determined. The advice here will help you to make those changes. And remember, no one is ever stuck in a rut. We always have the choice to get out.
