Get Creative:
Learn something new. Find a new hobby or craft. Take an online course or buy an instructional book. Find something you are intrigued by and learn about it. Focusing our attention on something new breaks the monotony. A feeling of well being is induced by a warm sense of satisfaction that you have accomplished something worthwhile. Even if it is just something small to break up your day. Indulge yourself in a gratifying sense of accomplishment. You are now a more well rounded person for it. Just as gratification is important for your own self-esteem, why not share that with others?
Give Goodies:
Is there an elderly neighbor near-by who would appreciate a little special attention? Do you have a downtrodden friend or relative who is having an especially rough time in life right now? Give yourself another way to exercise your creativity by baking some brownies, muffins or cookies and giving some to that person or persons you have in mind. If you don't bake, pick up some donuts or a cake at the bakery to share. The act of giving is a timeless biblical principal. When you give of yourself, your time or your treats, it comes right back to you. The kindness you express to another to genuinely uplift them creates a deep sense of gratitude within yourself. Giving takes your mind off yourself and gives you a different perspective in life, and it never fails. If you truly need a new perspective on life, it's time to get away.
Go Away:
There comes a time when you just need to get away from it all. A break from the daily grind is a cure all for monotony. If you live in the suburbs, take off for the mountains. If you live in the mountains, go to the beach. Get out and appreciate nature. Enjoy the beauty of the landscape. Listen to the trickling of a refreshing mountain stream. Take in the scent of the salt air. Feel the delightful breezes sooth your skin. Take it all in and get some photos to take home with you. Let them serve as reminders of that unique environment to take you back again when that feeling starts to return.
When you start getting that nagging feeling again, go ahead and incorporate one or all three of these simple ways to get out of a rut. Learn something new. Make something and give it away. Take some time to get away. The pleasures in these small acts will bring you back into a sense of well being again and restore your stamina for dealing with daily life.
