For example, if a boy was bitten by a dog in his childhood and he had to undergo several treatments, he may have a fear of facing dogs even after he grows into a 40 year old man. Another good example could be hiding away from society, which many do, as they fear insults or embarrassments. Here are some techniques to deal with phobias and meeting the greatest challenge of life - fighting our phobias.
Common Phobias:
Social phobia, agoraphobia, necrophobia, vertigo or acrophobia, brontophobia, claustrophobia, arachnophobia and the list is endless. Social phobia is the fear of being in a crowd or in a public area where as agoraphobia is the fear of having a panic attack! Necrophobia is the fear of death, acrophobia commonly known as vertigo is the fear of height, brontophobia is the fear experienced when there is lightening and thunder and arachnophobia is the fear of spiders. Claustrophobia reminds us of Robert from 'The Da Vinci Code' who is afraid of small closed areas, like an elevator or an airplane.
These phobias can trigger some psychological as well as some emotional symptoms, which may sometimes be embarrassing and also make you feel helpless. Whatever the fear, one should know how to deal with the phobia they are suffering from. Though it is easier said than done, awareness and education can help us get out of a tight situation where a phobia has gripped our life.
Tips To Fight Back Phobias:
There are many techniques to properly tackle your phobia or fear at home, at work and even at public places. Here are a few tips to overcome phobias -
First know the cause of the phobia. Recollect the incident that has actually developed aversion and fear towards a situation or a particular object. It may be a bit stressful but it is very important to go to the root of the problem to eliminate it completely.
Keep your family and friends informed about your phobia as they can help you recover any trauma or at least see to it that they avoid building circumstances that makes you feel nervous. Be aware you should choose the right set of people to share your discomfort, as there may be people who may misuse your weakness against you.
Get a psychologist's help to successfully overcome the phobia. A doctor will prescribe you medication for your anxiety and also put you on a program to help you end the fear or at least get a hold of the fear and learn to live with it. You can also get additional help from many support groups, online or offline.
Lastly, one must have a strong will to conquer their phobia to make all other treatments or remedies work. For an instance if you have a specific phobia, fear of dogs, the next time you see one you should make up your mind to face it and repeatedly tell yourself that dogs are harmless and are loyal beings. So fight your phobia by getting proper professional help, support group, and through family and friends to live your life to the fullest.
