How to Overcome Claustrophobia

Claustrophobia affects many people throughout the world. Claustrophobia is a very strong fear of confined or closed in places. In order to overcome claustrophobia, a person needs to understand specifically what causes them to become nervous in closed in areas. They also need to find what the best method is for them to try and get over the fear.

Understanding exactly what pushes your fear to the level of claustrophobia is the first key to overcoming it. For some people, claustrophobia is caused just by being in a small space. It does not matter what this space is like, as long as it is small enough to make them afraid. For others, claustrophobia is caused not mainly by a small area, but the fact that there may not be an easy way out. For example, a person that is claustrophobic may not be overly afraid of a small room, such as a closet, until the door is shut and their way out is gone.

Some people become claustrophobic by remembering a certain experience from their past. If someone had a traumatic experience in a small space in the past, they could easily be affected for the rest of their life.

One way to try to overcome claustrophobia is to talk to a doctor or therapist. Though this type of help can be very expensive, it is the best way to find out exactly what is causing your fear. A therapist can easily help you find a way to combat your fear and eventually be free from it.

Another way to fight claustrophobia is to put yourself in a situation that would cause fear, and emerge from it fine. Knowing that you can make it out of a situation that makes you fearful will boost your confidence and help you to overcome uncomfortable situations in the future. This does not mean that after one time getting out of a claustrophobic situation that you will be fine, however. It will take more work to totally free yourself of your fear.

Before purposely getting yourself into a situation that you know will make you claustrophobic, find the best way to focus your mind and calm your body down. Meditation works for some people and even taking the time to take deep breaths and relax really works. Find what calms you down and then move on to the next step of putting yourself in an uncomfortable situation.

Some people even find the key to overcoming claustrophobia in hypnosis. This is a very common way to treat those who have tried all other means of treatment. Hypnosis can relax the mind to a point where the fear of closed in places can be worked with.

Though it may seem impossible at most times, overcoming claustrophobia is something that can be done. All that is needed is some focus within yourself. This focus within yourself combined with the help of others, such as a therapist or friends, will allow you to come closer to emerging free from your fear of confined places.
