Even if you're in a diet program, depression may take place but may not be necessarily related to weight loss at all. Let's say a person has financial problems and is depressed, he/she may still be depressed about it while in a diet program or even before the program begins. To overcome depression, where do you think should we start?
Well, in my opinion and based on my experience, one of the vital steps in overcoming depression while in a diet program is to notice the signs that you are depressed. In relation to weight loss programs, one may feel tired while working out and not give enough effort. Even after an intense routine for at least 5 minutes, you don't break a sweat because you feel down and you don't exert enough effort. Procrastination is another telltale sign that you may be depressed. If you have a strict schedule and you don't follow it or say to yourself that you can always adjust the days then it may be related to depression.
Eating is a common sign that a person is depressed. Impulse eating or eating because a person is enjoying the act of eating and not because he/she is hungry can be a sign of depression and may even lead to food addiction. As you know, diet is an integral part of losing weight and if you do not control eating, your workout routines won't do any good. You may just be burning what you eat or worse, you may be eating a lot more than you burn. So instead of losing weight, you gain more weight.
The next step is probably the most important part which is acceptance. If you are well aware of the symptoms of depression, accepting that you are somewhat in a state of depression and its reason is a very good starting point since you'll most likely know how to handle the situation. It gives you a much clearer perspective on what you need to do next.
And of course, the most important thing you must do is to keep your motivation in losing weight. Think of the person or persons whom you are doing it for. Why are you doing it in the first place? Visualize yourself becoming successful and drive yourself to reach your goals. Always have a positive attitude and mindset and you're well on your way to completely overcoming your depression.
From there, if your workout schedule was affected by what happened, do your best to get yourself on track by adjusting the dates on your calendar and then jump straight into the workout again. Plan your program well and do your best to get back. Act immediately and act fast.
Well, these are just some of the signs and the things I did in order to overcome my own depression. It may not be depression at all and could actually be plain laziness and the usual procrastination. But if a person is truly depressed, he/she may not be able to fully exploit the advantages and expected results of a weight loss program. Losing weight is hard enough by itself so don't let depression stand in the way of your program.
These may not work for you but I'm sure you can try the things I did and who knows, you may get better results than me or you could recover more quickly. But once you are able to overcome depression, I'm pretty sure you'll get the most out of your workout and eventually reach your goals. I wish you all the best.
