How to Overcome Your Fear of Flying

Nicholas Conley
We all have our phobias. For many, one of those phobias may be air travel. It's hard to say just what the root of this fear is and it probably varies from person to person. However, for those stressed individuals getting ready to board a plane at sometime in the near future, here are some things to keep in mind.

First of all, stay rational. We've all seen disaster movies and we've all read the stories on the news but it's important to keep in mind that those are isolated incidents. According to Crash Stuff, the chance that you'll be in an aircraft accident are about 1 in 11,000,000, whereas the chances that you'll be in an automobile crash are 1 in 5,000. A car might feel safer but in reality, you risk your life far more every time you take a road cruise than you ever do getting on a plane.

There are other fears that you can conquer if you think about them with a clear mind ahead of time. I have a friend, for example, who refuses to fly because of his fear of heights. Personally, I'm terrified of heights - getting me on a roller coaster is about as likely as getting a vegetarian to eat a chuck steak - but I don't have a problem flying. Why? Because it just takes a moment of thought to realize that there's no way I'm going to fly out the window of the airplane and topple downwards to my inevitable doom.

Now, for some, rationality isn't enough because they recognize their fear is purely irrational. The best thing you can do if you recognize the illogicality of the fear is try to find the source of it. Maybe you had a bad experience with planes when you were younger, maybe you're prone to panic attacks, hell, maybe you saw Snakes on a Plane and it left a horrible scar on your subconscious that still gives you nightmares to this day. Go back to the source and conquer it.

Finally, though, if absolutely nothing else works? Just keep yourself busy. Airplanes are filled with activities to fill up the time you spend on them, ranging from magazines, to movies to snacks. These days, you can even bring your laptop on board. Whatever techniques you find work best to overcome your fear will, in the end, be rewarded by the fast travel that airplanes are known for, so just sit back, relax and enjoy the flight.
