Fear:

I would have to say this by far is the biggest reason a lot of people can't take their own blood sugar this is usually caused from Blood, Needles, or fear of Pain. This for some is the hardest thing to overcome & will only be over come when you have had your sugar levels taken many times.

Pain:

This is a real factor of taken your blood sugar. The good news is there is so many alternative places you can now take your blood which almost makes the procedure painless. I personally overcome the pain by taken my blood sugar so many times a callous builds up & makes the procedure painless.

Equipment:

There are many brand's out there that are suitable for taken your blood sugar levels. Find a kid that offers alternative testing places & small gauges on the needles used to take the blood. Keep in mind the smaller the needle the less painful. I also have found the quicker the needle pricks the finger for blood the less painful. The one's I like to use most are the Acu-Check brand lancets.

Importance:

This is the biggest thing you should keep your mind is how important it is to keep an accurate measuring of your blood sugar daily so you can monitor yourself. I think this has been the biggest thing that has motivated me to overcome the scare of the procedure of taken my blood sugar. After all the only painful part is the split second you pull the trigger on the lancet device. After that it's not so bad at all.

Motivation to overcome fear:

Love yourself enough to take care of yourself. Realize that this is now a part of your life that you have to live with & take care of. Know that technology is growing rapidly & before to long there will be less painful devices on the market then there is today. Take time to get familiar with how the lancet actually works. There is multiple settings you can usually set your lancet to also. This will help determine how deep the lancet goes in to your skin to get blood to come to the surface.

Helpful Tips:

Some helpful tips would be try to promote blood to the tips of your fingers by massaging them with an upwards motion. Then set the lancet device to a lower setting such at one or two. Usually number one never works for me & occasionally number two works quite well with good blood flow to your fingertips. Worst case scenario hand the lancet device over to someone who will quickly do it for you.
