How to Overcome the Stress of Shipping Cats During an International Move

Sophie Spyrou

Moving overseas is a stressful time for everyone involved. Not only do you need to start thinking about moving companies, packing and resigning from your job, you also need to consider what to do with your cats. Cat owners have even more to think about and plan for. If you want to take your cats with you when you move, you will undoubtedly face some stress along the way. How can you overcome the stress of shipping cats during an international move?

Save for the travel expenses

Shipping cats overseas is not as simple as putting the cats on a 1-hour domestic flight. It can cost thousands of dollars to ship cats overseas, which is why it is a good idea to start saving for the expense of shipping your cats months in advance. Remember to factor in the costs of multiple visits to the veterinarian for vaccinations, pet passports, microchipping and other upcoming expenses, such as airline-approved kennels.

Prepare cats for travel

Cats that are going to be shipped overseas need to be thoroughly prepared for travel. A simple way to overcome the stress of shipping your cats is to read up on the destination country's requirements, as well as the airline's specific requirements. Make sure you are familiar with each step you need to take. Some rules and regulations change on a regular basis, which is why you should keep abreast of the latest news for pet travel. Will the cats be booked into quarantine upon arrival? Is there a way to avoid quarantine? Which vaccinations do the cats need prior to international travel?

Don't leave everything to the last minute

Getting everything done in a timely manner before you leave will do much to alleviate the stress of shipping your cats overseas. Do not wait until the last minute to get your cats ready for travel. Check regulations on a regular basis to make sure you have a clear timeframe to work from as you prepare your cats for travel. The last thing you want is to face the heartbreaking decision of leaving Fluffy and Kit behind because you left it to late to adequately prepare them for travel.

Cat owners who are moving abroad with their furry friends will want to do all they can to make sure their pets cleared for international travel. The best time to begin is months prior to your move, in order to allow yourself plenty of time to prepare your cats. Taking the correct steps along the way can greatly reduce anxiety and the stress associated with shipping cats during an international move.
