How to Overcome the Stress of a Visa Application

Sophie Spyrou

Applying for a visa to visit, study or settle in another country is often time a consuming and costly affair. But it can also be very stressful for visa applicants. How can you overcome the stress of a visa application?

Allow Yourself Plenty of Time

One way to overcome the stress of a visa application is to make sure you apply well in advance. Do your research ahead of time. If the visa you require takes up to 3 months to process, allow yourself 6 months. That way, you will not be rushed to complete and submit your application. Allowing plenty of time also helps ensure you submit all of the relevant documents and supporting documentation that is required for your particular application.

Read Through Guidance Notes Carefully

Guidance notes that come with visa applications are there for a reason, to help applicants complete the forms to the best of their ability. Read through guidance notes carefully and thoroughly. You may benefit from printing the guidance notes and going through them two or three times. Then make sure you are entering the correct information for each question. Do not rush through the form and make the mistake of entering your information, when the personal details of your sponsor (spouse, employer etc) are required instead.

Do Not Let the Visa Application Consume Your Whole Life

There is no denying that your visa application is very important and will be a high priority for you in the coming weeks and months as you start to make travel plans to move abroad. But there is no reason why you should allow your visa application to consume your whole life. You should still take time to relax, enjoy your family and leisure time so that your every waking moment is not centred round your visa application. If not, your stress levels will be through the roof, which will not help your application one bit.

Applying for a visa is stressful, but there are plenty of ways to reduce, and even overcome, the stress of a visa application. Make sure you allow yourself plenty of time, read through guidance notes carefully and do not allow the visa application to consume your whole life. A level-headed, sensible approach will help you stay calm in the coming weeks and months.
