How to Overcome Your Worries

Lee Andrew Henderson
Almost everybody at some point in their life will find something that they are worried about. Even the most relaxed person may become worried at a huge important part of their life.

Personally I was always worried about things growing up. Whoever came up with the phrase "don't sweat the small stuff" never sent me the memo because I worried all the time (and sweated too). I would worry about very small things like not doing my homework or having to give a speech in class.

The good news is there are some steps you can take to overcome your worries and be a more relaxed person and relieve a lot stress.

Like most problems the first thing to do in order to overcome your worries is to admit you're worried about something. How you do this is up to you but you might want to say out loud what it is you are worried about or write it down on a piece of paper a few times. Whatever your worry is make sure it sinks in.

Once you've admitted your worry the next thing to do is think about that worry for a while. Specifically think about why it is worrying you. For example if you're worried about a bad grade in school are you worried because your friends will think you are dumb? Is the worry because your parents are going to be mad? Sometimes finding out the reason for a worry is the first step to finding a way to overcome your worries.

The next thing to consider when trying to overcome your worries is very easy. Often you'll hear somebody say, "What's the worst that can happen?" When somebody says this it can sometimes sound like they are just dismissing your concerns but it's actually a great question.

Ask yourself, "What's the worst that can happen?" Sometimes you'll be surprised to find out that you're worried over something that isn't that important. Maybe you're worried about going to the dentist. What is the worst that can happen? Your mouth will hurt for a few hours? Maybe a few days? After some thinking some will come to the realization that they were worried about nothing.

Looking towards the future can sometimes help you overcome your worries. Will this worry be relevant tomorrow? Will it be relevant a week from now? A month from now? A year from now? If your worry won't be relevant for very long it's probably not that important.

Of course serious things do happen everyday. Sometimes the thing that you are worried about is very serious, maybe even life threatening. If that is the case then you should spend a small amount of time with your worry. Think about it, meditate, pray about it. Do whatever it is you normally do but when you're done thinking about tell yourself that it's going to be a good day regardless of your worries. The rest of the day keep a positive attitude and not worry about anything. If it's hard not to think about your worries then keep busy, that always help. But whatever you do don't worry too much, life is too short to constantly be worried about everything.
