How to Use Overture's Keyword Selector Tool and Generate Article Ideas

Stumped for article ideas? Has your creativity stalled? Do you need some web content ideas that will boost web site visitors to your articles?

One of the most useful free web tools for helping you generate popular web content ideas is Overture's KeywordSelector Tool.

Overture's Keyword Selector Tool has quickly become my favorite free web tool for discovering popular keywords and keyword phrases.

Not only has Overture's Keyword Selector Tool helped me hone in on the more popular keyword searches and keyword phrase searches, it has become an endless well of future web content ideas.

How You Can Use Overture's Keyword Selector Tool and Generate Article Ideas

Go to the Overture's Keyword Selector Tool. The link is clickable, but here is the URL anyway: http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion

Next, type in a word or phrase that describes the topic of your article. You should at least have an idea about what you intend to write. Or just pick a word that interests you: baby, sports, crafts, Apple, energy.

Because I like to write parenting and baby-related articles, I will use "baby" to show how many real article ideas can be generated from one simple word, when using Overture's Keyword Selector Tool.

The list comes up with the number of times the word was searched. It also includes all related keyword phrases and the number of times they were searched.

As you can see from this top 10 list (see image one), baby name is the most popular baby-related search.

Here is the list of the words related to the search on "baby":

baby name
baby r us
baby gift
baby shower
baby sitter
baby furniture
baby invitation shower
baby phat
baby shower game

Now, you could write an article about baby names, but that is probably too general. By clicking on the phrase "baby name" you will see a list of popular keyword phrases related to searches on baby names.

This is where you can mine the golden nuggets for your article ideas.

The 10 most popular keyword phrase searches related to "baby name" are:

baby name
baby meaning name
baby boy name
baby girl name
baby name popular
2006 baby name top
baby name unique
100 baby name top
baby indian name
baby book name
baby meaning name origin

From this list you can base any number of articles. For even more ideas, click on a phrase from list, and dig deeper into the popular keyword phrases.

Notes About Using Keyword Selector Tool

1. Timeliness of the Popularity of the Keyword Phrases and Keywords

The search results are not live and they are not as current as the front page would have you believe. When you conduct your search, the explanation reads that the search results will show "How many times that term was searched on last month"

When you retrieve the actual search results, a different date is listed. The page lists when the data was culled. For example, right now, the page shows the results from "January 2007."

Simply ignore any obvious seasonal-related searches, and use the rest of the data. Even though the results I used are six months old, they are a useful compass in directing your content to the content people seek on the web.

2. Sex Related Phrases

This is just a fair warning. Some words will generate sex-related keyword phrases towards the top of the list. Even the most innocent of phrases can turn "R-rated."

Generate Endless Article Ideas

Using Overture's Keyword Selector Tool in this manner can help spark some article ideas and help you generate more web content.

Great, there are lots of free keyword tools online and even though I've known this I have never used one; I think I'll start now.

I have ideas... just lack of motivation. Well, been busy on print articles this past month though. This sounds like a very handy tool, though. Thanks.

Incredibly useful suggestions. Thanks. I am a little low on ideas right now.
