How to Make Your Own 'The Breakfast Club' Costumes

"The Breakfast Club" is now regarded as one of the most well known 80s teen dramas. Written and directed by John Hughes, this cult classic is the story of five high school students who are serving a Saturday detention. Each of the five represents a different high school stereotype and by the end of the movie the group discovers they have much more in common than they once thought they did. A group of five people who want to attend a Halloween or costume party with a theme could easily assemble the outfits worn by "The Breakfast Club." The key is to plan early and look in vintage and thrift shops for clothes that you don't have readily in your closet.

Andrew Clark - The Athlete

Emilio Estevez played the jock of the movie. His hair was short and blond and he wore blue jeans and white high top sneakers. For his look, find a blue tank top or a white t-shirt and a blue hooded sweatshirt. He also sported a blue and gray letterman jacket.

Brian Johnson - The Brain

Played by Anthony Michael Hall, Brian was the typical nerd in the movie. To dress as Brian Johnson, wear khaki pants that just a little bit too short, white socks, a green sweatshirt, and blue tennis shoes. Make sure you talk about the Math club and the Physics club a lot.

Claire Standish - The Princess

Molly Ringwald's character was the red-haired rich girl of the group. To mimic her preppy but slightly bohemian style, wear a short sleeved pink blouse, a knee length brown suede skirt, and brown knee-high boots. Accessorize with pearl earrings, a wrist watch, and brown leather purse. Bonus points if you learn and perform her lipstick trick at the party.

John Bender - The Criminal

Judd Nelson portrayed the angst-filled, sarcastic delinquent stereotype. To make your own costume here, you will need slightly longer, messed up brown hair and a bad attitude. Wear a white thermal shirt under a red plaid flannel shirt with the sleeves cut off, black jeans, and black boots. John Bender also wore a faded denim jacket and black gloves with the fingers cut off.

Allison Reynolds -The Basket Case

Ally Sheedy's character was the quiet, weird girl you remember from high school. She's in detention by choice because she hates her home life. Allison does things like use dandruff as snow for a drawing and eats sandwiches made of cereal and Pixie Stix. To dress as Allison, wear a long, oversized black sweater and a dark colored long skirt. Layer white socks over black tights and black shoes. Carry an oversized purse and for added impact, make sure your hair is slightly disheveled and that it looks like you haven't washed it in a few days.
