How to Make Your Own Christmas Card Holder

Sass Ashe
As the holidays approach, your mailbox will start to be filled with wonderful colorful envelopes, which hold inside a greeting from friends and family that you may not have seen since this time last year or even longer. We all treasure these short notes jotted inside merry cards, but often despair about how to display them so all who visit can see their loveliness. My grandmother had a very simple Christmas card holder that she used for as long as I can remember. I too have made one of these with my children and take great pleasure at unpacking it with the holiday decorations each year. To make your own Christmas card holder you will need:

1 Large Coffee Can with both ends opened.

1Skien of Yarn- any color, but we always use green or red.

Scissors

Glue

Glitter

Hairspray

1. Take the end of the yarn and glue it inside the coffee can.

2. Then proceed to slide the yarn skein through the coffee can wrapping the yarn around from inside to outside then back in at the bottom over and over until the entire coffee can is wrapped in yarn.

3. Once the can is covered snip the yarn and glue the end to the inside of the can.

4. Sprinkle all over with glitter and hairspray to hold glitter in place.

4. Once the glue and hairspray dries, stand the can upright and slide one end of each card into a strand of yarn, to the middle leaving the covers to flap open. When filled with a lot of cards this is a very pretty and colorful holder that allows you to see the front picture and the messages inside the cards easily.

Another idea for decorating the Christmas card holder is using a glitter glue pen, but I have found that the yarn tends to get glued together and you may have whole areas that you can't put any cards on.

This type of Christmas card holder keeps the cards safe, and displays them nicely without tape or tacks. It looks very nice on a coffee table or shelf in the foyer.

This is a very easy and simple Christmas card holder for those of us who aren't especially crafty and one that you children will enjoy making that will last for many years.
