How to Make Your Own Christmas Snow Globe

Amalynn
Snow globes are wonderful to have around for the house for Christmas. And even equally nice when they are ones you made yourself! Here are directions to make your holiday snow globe. You and your kids will create wonderful memories when you try this craft at home. Collect big jars throughout the year so everyone can get in on the holiday festivities.

To make your own snow globe you will need:

A glass jar with a very tight fitting lid. (You can use any kind of jar, from baby food to jelly jars...although bigger ones are probably the best)
Distilled water
glycerin
white or silver glitter
Silicone sealant
A plastic jar lid that can fit inside of the jar itself
Acrylic paint and paintbrush
Craft glue
coiled rope or decorative ribbon in Christmas color
Christmas ornament of your choice

You can also use another plastic jar lid or a wooden circle piece that is bigger than your jar, to use as a stand, but that is optional.

Make sure your ornament can fit within the diameter of the jar you are using. It is usually better to have your ornament slightly higher than the bottom of the jar. Place the plastic lid inside of the jar to make sure it is positioned correctly. Glue the ornament to the lid, and then use the silicone sealant to glue it down securely into the inside of the jar. Check the sealants instructions and allow the ornament and base to dry completely.

Get another jar to test the glitter as snow fall. You can either use the distilled water or even boiled water that is allowed to cool completely. Add a small teaspoon of glitter, put the lid on securely, and shake. Add as much as you think you need. Add a couple drops of glycerin, which will slow the rate of the falling snow.

Pour that water and glitter into the globe jar, filling it almost to the very top. Screw the lid into place tightly. Some water may be displaced and come out over the top of the jar. Dry it, and shake! Your snow globe is almost finished.

For extra stability, use the sealant glue to glue the jar to the wooden base or another lid. then paint the base and the jar however you want...using Christmas colors, snowflakes, snowmen, wreaths, whatever you like. When the paint is dry, use the glue to add on Christmas rope or lace. You can decorate your globe however you wish.

Thanks for the instructions to do this. I nanny for a three year old little girl who loves to do "protects." I wanted to do one of these using her brothers' baby food jars, but wasn't sure what to use -- just water, or add glycerin.

I thank you and so does my 3-year old crafting buddy.
