You will need: 2 rolls of yarn or wool in any colors you desire, 2 buttons or any material you'd like to use for the eyes, and a small amount of stuffing. These basic materials can easily be found at any local craft store, or any Walmart for a small price.
Take your starter ring (which will be used for all pieces attached to the monster) and 3chain join loop, 2 chain, 5 single crochet stitches into a loop. Then you'll want to join the 2nd chain (from the beginning) and pull a little tail to make the ring nice and snug. You'll want to continue by following this pattern.
There are a few different pieces that are involved in making your crochet monster, and you'll want make each piece in listed order.
Ears - To make the ears, you'll need a starter ring single crochet stitch, 1 round finish with a longer tail to sew on the head later.
Arms - Start with a starter ring (x5)(12 stitches) 2 single stitches, (x3)(15 stitches) Single stitch 5 rounds, (x2) (13 stitches) single stitch 3 rounds, (x2) (11 stitches) 5 single stitches and then end the arms by a finish with a long tail left to assist in attaching the arms to the body later. You'll want to stuff these arms, but only the front half of them.
Legs- If you are planning to use 2 different colors on your monster, you'll want to start interchanging your yarn or wool while working on the legs. You'll need a starter ring (x11) (25stitches) single stitch 3 rounds in the second color and then add in the first color and continue with single stitches. Finish each leg with a short end tail. Then, you'll want to stuff the feet, and make sure they are packed firmly.
Face/Body- The body is just going to in shape of a square, and can be single stitched all the way from the beginning to the end. One color would look the best, since the legs have multi color. Before closing up the stitching on the face, stuff firmly and then close it up.
Once the body is done, you'll want to stitch the ears, arms and legs onto the body, and add the eyes or buttons onto the face to complete the monster. You can also sew a stitch across the bottom part of the face to make a smile.
