How to Make Your Own Curtain Ties with Ribbon

FlutterBy
Tired of looking at my dull curtains, I figured out a way to spice them up a little. I went through my craft supplies and found a roll of 3-inch wide ribbon. After some trial and error, I ended up using the ribbon as a curtain tie.

At first I just sewed the ribbon together after putting it around the curtain. Then I had to cut if off, and that's when I thought of a simple way to make them reusable. I added a button and it worked perfectly. I now can make enough ties for all my curtains for under $5 and it looks wonderful.

Materials:

Ribbon at least 3 inches wide - try to find a ribbon that won't fray at the ends when cut. If you have curtains with a pattern then consider getting a solid color such as black, white, green or whatever would go along with your color scheme.

Measuring Tape

Sewing needle and thread

Button

Marker

Scissors

Decide where you want to position the tie on the curtain. Using the measuring tape figure out how long your ribbon needs to be. If you have thick curtains you'll want to cut the ribbon a little longer.

Next cut the ribbon and then place it around the curtain. Make sure its long enough and also make sure you don't have too much excess. Using the marker put a small dot where the button needs to be.

Now cut a small slit for the button to fit through on one end of the ribbon. On the other end sew on the button. If you don't want the button to show you can sew it on so that it will face the curtain. Now you can use your ribbon and easily remove it for use some other time.

You can buy ribbons in all colors and patterns at stores like Wal-Mart or any crafts store. They are often less than $5 and I always have enough to make ties for all the curtains in my house. Its so cheap and easy to do. These ties also work well on shower curtains.

If you want to you can add small embellishments and just sew them on. Small flowers, beads, charms or anything small would do. I would browse through the sewing and scrap booking aisles to find something you might like. If you ever need to wash your curtain ties don't do it in the washer. Fill a sink with some hot water and a small amount of laundry detergent. Wash them by hand and then hang to dry.
