How to Make Your Own Delicious "Sun" Iced Tea

Brooke Coin
Especially in the summer, iced tea is a popular beverage all over the world. But you don't need to spend several dollars a gallon for store brought iced tea. "Sun Tea" is a tasty iced tea you cam make at home, in just a few hours and with only a few, cheap ingredients. Here's how;

1.
Pick a large glass container in which to brew your sun tea. Wash it out thoroughly to make sure it does not contain anything that will contaminate the taste of your sun tea. The best containers to use are those with a screw top lid and plastic pitchers are not suitable for brewing as hot plastic will affect the delicate taste of your final brew. Many supermarkets and craft stores sell jars that are perfect for brewing purposes.

2.
For every gallon of water, add sixteen teabags. That may sound like a lot, but tea is very inexpensive to purchase in this form. Most supermarkets sell economy packs of teabags for under $1. Dollar stores can be an excellent place to find the more exotic tea flavors at a discounted price, if you want to brew a sun tea with a different taste to the usual "regular" iced tea.

3.
Use only filtered and distilled water, as some tap waters carry an unpleasant flavor of their own. There is no need to heat your water; the heat of the sun will be taking care of that. Pour the water into your brewing jar, over the teabags.

4.
Place your jar outside, in direct sunlight for about three hours. Try to ensure you put it somewhere where frisky pets or boisterous children will not be able to knock it over. As the direction of the sun changes throughout the day, keep an eye on your jar to make sure it is still in the right place to catch the most sunshine, moving it around once in a while may be necessary for the best results.

5.
Once your tea is done steeping in the sun, remove the used teabags from the jar with a clean spoon. Place your container into the refrigerator to chill for a few hours before drinking.

6.
To serve the perfect glass of sun tea, pour it into a chilled glass filled with ice. You can add sugar, sweetener or honey to impart a sweeter flavor, and lemon is a great garnish for traditional sun brewed iced tea.
