How to Make Your Own Family Organizer

Elizabeth Keating
A family organizer can be a very helpful tool in keeping a family running smoothly. Making your own organizer allows you to personalize it to fit your specific needs. My Family Organizer holds a calendar, schedules, menu lists, shopping lists, phone numbers, take out menus, insurance info, and pertinent financial information, birthday lists, pet info and a section for each family member. With the busy lives we lead today, I feel every household needs to make a Family Organizer.

To make your own Organizer you will need a three ring notebook, some lined notebook paper, a few tabbed dividers, and a couple 3 ring folders. I recommend a zippered three ring binder so that you are sure all your information will not get lost. The one I purchased is called a cargo-zip made a company called Avery. On the cover it has slots to put in photos and I put a picture of each family member and pet. This awesome binder also has zippered pouches so I have a place for things like pens, paper and envelopes. Whatever binder you may choose is fine, just make sure to brighten it up with pictures or a child's drawing to make it fun and personal.

Don't not be overwhelmed by the amount of information you'd like to put in your Family Organizer. Take a few baby steps and you'll be on your way to a simple, easy-to-find information center for you and your family. Begin by making a Table of Content page. Here you can make a simple list of all the information you will be including in your binder so that everything is easy to find.

Next, simply add your dividers and paper and start off with your first section. You need to make a quick list of information that you need to access on an almost daily basis. My first section is schedules, because these are needed to be checked on all the time. I put a three ring folder in the front and any schedules we get from church, school, or activities goes right into this folder. My next section is Food/Menus. This is obviously an important section that all families will use. I keep a list of our favorite meals, recipes to try, and a basic shopping list under this tab. Fashion this section of you Family Organizer to suit your needs.

You can add as little or as much information as you want, as the Organizer needs to be suited to your family. I made my Family Organizer and placed it by my kitchen phone. This is a centralized area where my entire family knows they can access any needed information. My Family Organizer has been very beneficial to my family and I urge everyone to create their own.
